Activists seek ban on military participation in gay weddings
Source: The Washington Post

Conservative legal activists and Christian leaders said Thursday that they will sue on behalf of military chaplains if the Senate does not pass a Republican version of the annual Pentagon policy bill that includes language barring Defense Department employees from participating in same-sex marriage ceremonies.

The annual defense authorization bill, which sets military policy for the following year, passed the House on Thursday with bipartisan support. Among hundreds of spending and policy provisions, the language backed by activists would bar service members and civilian Defense Department workers from participating in same-sex marriage ceremonies on military property.

Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) introduced the provision this month in response to guidance issued in April to Navy chaplains that said they would be permitted to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies at military chapels in states that recognize gay marriage once the ban on gays in the military officially ends. The Navy later withdrew the guidance pending further legal review by Pentagon lawyers.

The Navy’s proposed policy would make it difficult for military chaplains to fulfill their dual obligations as religious leaders and service members, according to the leaders of 21 Christian organizations who wrote this week to the top chaplains for the Air Force, Army and Navy. The groups select and endorse military chaplains to represent their denominations.

13. They have absolutely no solutions for jobs, that was just a front to get elected, and
now they will pursue their hateful attacks on citizens and social issues. Republican is a code word for authoritative greedy psychopaths.

12. Shouldn't it be left up to the individual Chaplain?
Just as a civilian clergy cannot be forced to marry any couple they don't want to. And why would a gay couple want a Chaplain who is hostile to them to perform the ceremony?

14. A chaplain in the Military is a member of the military, right? So, if the military
cannot discriminate based upon LGBT service members, they should be treating the marriage between same sex couples without discrimination... However, I thought this was the Navy and how many Naval units are also in states that allow same sex marriage.. This is just more hate talk and picking a little tiny line out of the guidelines to get the hateful crowd on its feet and into the voting booths..

My sister in law said that if this passed, her husband wouldn't want to serve in the Army any longer. I never heard her husband say this. Also, he has not resigned... AND she's using up all the "freebie" passes for all the FL fun attractions for her family's vacation trip.. So, I guess its all a bunch of hateful rhetoric that means nothing in reality. I explained that he was already serving with GLBT service people; just now they can't be thrown out for being gay. AND that he's not some gay magnant. If he doesn't like men now, he's not going to like them tomorrow. AND married with 3 kids (unless he has some side to him she is unaware of) would not signle "teh gay" to hit on him.

17. why are these people so concerned with the sexuality of others?
really, my daughter goes to school with a girl who has 2 mommies, my girl said maman et papa? and i said no, she has 2 mommies and that the girl's 2 mommies lived with her whereas your mommy and daddy dont live together anymore so she is really lucky to have 2 parents in her house. then my girl ran off to play with the other girl... really where is the problem? why cant such couples get married? at least they can have civil unions in france, hold hands in the street in a small town and all but really it baffles me that some people want to waste so much of their time telling other people how to live their lives.

19. That's what I think too. With a lot of these bigots and authoritatives if you dig into
their personal lives they have a lot of problems and insecurities they project onto other people.
