Ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, under house arrest, leaves NYC residence to go to doctor

NEW YORK - Former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn left the Manhattan town house where he's being held under house arrest to go to the doctor on Friday.

A person familiar with Strauss-Kahn's plans told The Associated Press that the economist left his temporary home for the appointment. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the house arrest arrangement.

He and his wife got into a black vehicle around 7:30 a.m. outside the $50,000-a-month town house in Manhattan's trendy TriBeCa neighborhood. About two hours later, a vehicle sped up to the residence; Strauss-Kahn, his shoulders hunched slightly, strode briskly up the stairs and disappeared inside.

Strauss-Kahn was spending his second full day Friday in the latest locale for his high-priced house arrest, which allows the ex-IMF leader to leave for doctors' appointments, religious observances and court appearances.

Since no one can confirm the victim's HIV status, that seems like a smart move. Still, I bet he'll be having a lot of doctor appointments and meetings with his legal team to get him out of the house.

before we accept without question the accusations against him.

“In designing a new macroeconomic framework for a new world”, he stated, “the pendulum will swing—at least a little—from the market to the state, and from the relatively simple to the relatively more complex”.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn called for policymakers to pay more attention to inequality and social cohesion. “The lethal cocktail of prolonged high unemployment and high inequality can strain social cohesion and political stability, which in turn affects macroeconomic stability.” He suggested that inequality, which was a factor in the Middle East, might also have been among the root causes of the global crisis, and that sustainable global growth is associated with more equal income distribution.

“We need a new form of globalization, a fairer form of globalization, a globalization with a more human face”, he said. “The benefits of growth must be broadly shared, not just captured by a privileged few. While the market must stay center stage, the invisible hand must not become the invisible fist”.

Strauss-Kahn's ideas are not popular in certain circles, and he and his accuser were totally alone in that hotel suite. The accusations against him are very convenient. That does not mean that they are false, but Strauss-Kahn's points of view are unwelcome among conservatives and his willingness to state them made him an obvious target.

I'm going to wait before I make up my mind.

13. But skirtchasing and rape are very, very different things.

Especially if the skirtchaser is a wealthy Frenchman.

He may seem overly attentive to the ladies, but women who are a part of his culture may know how to say No quite effectively to his overly arduous advances.

There is a huge, huge difference between skirtchasing and rape. In fact, rapists usually don't really enjoy women all that much. Strauss-Kahn may be the exception, but it is hard for me to believe that a rapist could reach his age without having been charged with rape a couple of times.

Being overly amorous with people you know, skirtchasing is not rape. Harassing women in the workplace is bad stuff, but it also is not rape.

He is not being charged with skirtchasing. The accusations seem credible, DNA was found, he tried to flee (probably knowing that he would never face trial if he reached France).....leaving personal items in the hotel room. There are also rumours that he (and his friends) are looking to buy his way out of this. We will just have to wait and see how it shakes out.

bandwagon are right. I have no inside knowledge. But, as for his leaving for the airport, it is my understanding that he met his daughter for lunch and then went to the airport. That, at least, was the original story.

The French press (Le Monde) reported in the early days after the incident was announced that Sarkozy had it in for Strauss-Kahn, who was likely to be Sarkozy's opposition in the next election, and that there had been predictions that Sarkozy would set Strauss-Kahn up. I

So, I am not taking sides on this. We hear that there is a lot of evidence against Strauss-Kahn, but that evidence has yet to be tested in court. We shall see.

And the IMF might be a major player in facilitating that. Having the right person in charge of the IMF could be key.

I don't know exactly how it would work, but there seems to be something in the air. There has been talk of Greece or Portugal defaulting, and even U.S. Republican politicians have dropped a few hints about U.S. debt. It seems crazy, but the rich may be planning something. Maybe a debt for pension swap, or something along those lines.

Some people will say it is conspiratorial, but I say they don't understand big money and how it thinks. Remember the Wall Street bailouts. They screwed up, but who ended up paying the price?

16. Setting himself up to flee. Regular appointments are great

opportunities to switch identities with someone else and get thee to France, where you can live with your self much more easily. Money is no object and flights out of town can be chartered. They have many influential friends. House arrest should mean "house arrest". He should never have been allowed to leave jail. Plenty of money to bribe their way out of the country. I give them a month and they'll be gone.
