Kerry camp split on issue of Dean
WASHINGTON -- Howard Dean's strong fund-raising and recent rise in public opinion polls have created a divide within Senator John F. Kerry's presidential campaign, between aides who want to attack the former Vermont governor to stem the tide and others who believe his wave of support will crest on its own.

The views of the more aggressive group, represented by campaign manager Jim Jordan, were reflected this week when Kerry criticized any rival for the Democratic nomination who favors repealing all of the tax cuts enacted since President Bush took office in 2001. At least three of the nine candidates fit that billing, but aides circulated the Massachusetts senator's prepared text before a speech in Dover, N.H., and made it clear that Dean was the intended target.

''Real Democrats don't walk away from the middle class,'' Kerry declared Wednesday night. ''They don't take away a tax credit for families struggling to raise their children or bring back a tax penalty for married couples who are starting out or penalize teachers and waitresses by raising taxes on the middle class.''

A more reserved group of advisers is typified by David McKean, chief of staff in Kerry's Senate office. He is among those who believe that Dean's current political celebrity will fade with closer media scrutiny; they foresee an inevitable misstep for his campaign, and they argue that engaging Dean only helps him.

Both camps are united in believing that Kerry has built a strong campaign organization, and has successfully husbanded resources for an eventual showdown with Dean and the other Democrats, according to interviews with members of each group and other aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

1. Dean and Kucinich scare the bejesus out of DLC democrats
The DLC has done as much to destroy the democratic party as the republicans. Now that a Howard Dean comes along and not only works the grass roots but, the campain donors as well it scares the DLC. Then people like Kucinich who work the grassroots only and slowly but, surely works up his popularity that scares the hell out of the DLC. The DLC is worried because there is Actual democrats running in a democratic primary and not a bunch of republican ass kissing, pink tutu wearing sellouts.

6. Go check out
how Dean governed for 11 years in Vermont. He was the DLC poster child for New Dems.

You may trust his 6 month old conversion to the left. I do not.

7. ho hum
"Dean is not a member of the Democratic Leadership Council, the group founded in 1985 to promote centrism within the party, but he reads their literature and says they have some good ideas.

'At the beginning I think it was very good, because I think the party wasn't winning elections because we were too far to the left," he says. "Now I think the party has moved too far to the right.'"

11. So, which one is it? Oh, can't tell — Dean's sealed his papers.
The answers to Dean's stance, pro-left DLC or pro-right DLC and whatever elsewhere, are a mystery. The reason? No one can tell what the deal is because Dean ordered his gubernatorial papers sealed for 10 years. He originally wanted them sealed for 20.

From Vermont Public Radio:

EXCERPT...

Dean, who is running for president, told reporters recently why he wanted the files closed for four more years:

(Dean) "Well, there are future political considerations. We didn't want anything embarrassing appearing in the papers at a critical time in any future endeavor."

(Dillon) By law, the governor is supposed to leave his official correspondence with the secretary of state. But Dean was allowed to close files under the doctrine of executive privilege. The Vermont Supreme Court in 1990 ruled that executive privilege allows a governor to keep confidential documents that reflect "advisory opinions, recommendations, and deliberations." In other words, the paper trail that shows how the governor came to a decision can, and usually is, kept secret.

Dean and his lawyers got to decide what was covered by executive privilege. The result was 150 cubic feet of files that won't be released for a decade.

3. Why is the Kerry campaign so worried about Dean?
Oh wait, thats right, Dean's campaign is making their campaign look amatuerish. Dean just seems to be one step ahead of most of the candidates(except Kucinich).

Don't get me wrong, I'll still support Kerry if it comes down to it, no doubt about it, but they are starting to look pretty weak.

4. Dean Supporter here
But that's actually constructive cricitism of Dean.

The Democratic congress is never going to repeal the middle class portion of the tax cut -- the child tax credit, for example. So it doesn't do Dean or the country any good to advocate their repeal.

Dean should adjust his policy argument -- repeal all tax cuts --to be more in line with Kerry/Edwards -- repeal tax cuts for the wealthy.

5. I agree, copithorne. I think Dean should change his policy on this
Edited on Sat Aug-02-03 06:30 PM by w4rma
And I think that he could change his policy in a way that boosts his campaign while alerting more folks to how top-heavy Bush's tax cuts (and policy, in general) are.

13. All I can say is..
..thank god no one is listening to any of them right now. Oh, there are interest groups and town meetings, etc. But the general public knows far more about the "new fall lineup" on teeee-veee than they know Kerry-who??(is that his first orlast name) Dean---oh, that has to be a first name and is it Edward or Edwards?? Ohhhh AL--we know Al---he ran last year but it's interesting to see that the guy "who was always changing his image" now changed to "black". And Dennis.....oh, poor Dennis....if they see his picture on tv they think he is someone who sits in Paris cafes and plots anarchy. But..they now at least talk about Boooosh lying and soldiers dying. That's a start. Policy of the Dems or any Dem candidate??---they don't know policy stances from opera. Hey, ain't it about time for "Da' Bears"?????
