Clock ticks on key goals for governor08/03/03
HARRY ESTEVE
SALEM -- Gov. Ted Kulongoski has notched some impressive victories in his rookie term, including a transportation package worth $2.5 billion and a series of bills that could save Oregon billions in lower public pension costs.
But as the Legislature drags into its eighth and possibly final month, time is running out for Kulongoski to complete the ambitious list of goals he set since taking office.
More money for schools. A 1 percent lodging tax for tourism. Stable funding for state police. Financing for a major league baseball stadium.
None is an easy sell, and Kulongoski, a Democrat, might be forced to take a harder line if he wants to get his way on any of these issues.
