Bush Stand on Marriage Riles Gays in GOP (LCRs may not endorse Bush)
Bush Stand on Marriage Riles Gays in GOP
Stung by the president's pushing a constitutional ban on same-sex weddings, Log Cabin Republicans consider denying endorsement.

By Robin Abcarian, Times Staff Writer

PALM SPRINGS — The country's best known group of gay Republicans opened its three-day national convention here, and as expected, virtually all issues took a back seat to one: same-sex marriage.

The gathering of the Log Cabin Republicans — as clean-cut and mostly white as an old-fashioned chamber of commerce — drew triple the number of attendees that the meeting attracted in the past.

Organizers attributed the jump, to some 300 participants, to President Bush's Feb. 24 endorsement of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. For many gay Republicans — who thought Bush's promise of "compassionate conservatism" would ensure them room in the GOP tent — the proposal was a slap in the face. They are now facing a difficult decision: Should they withhold their endorsement from Bush to make a point?

9. I am gay and I don't understand it either
I have said for years that being a gay Republican is like being a Black member of the Klan or a Jewish Nazi. The few gay Republicans I have known always say, "they are wrong on this issue, but I agree with them on just about everything else." Well, so what - social issues are ones most likely to directly affect them (like gay marriage) and should trump everything else, but they don't see it that way.

What amazes me is that they even have to debate whether to support Bush or not.

5. Sam Sieder of AirAm's Majority Report nailed a GOP gay the other day
He asked, "Why are you supporting a party that denies your most basic humanity? Isn't it time to abanon the party?" He got the guy to admit he'd have to think about who to vote for!

7. ROFL
300 attendees at their NATIONAL convention.... and that's three tiimes usual number of attendees.

No wonder the executive director of the LCR got so snippy when I asked him how many members he had - it's downright embarrassing.

I have ALWAYS maintained that the LCR's get about 100 times more attention than their numbers would warrant. I was wrong. It seems to be 1,000 times more attention than their numbers warrant. Fucking idiots.
