Lee Roy Selmon, Hall of Fame football player, reportedly dead after stroke

TAMPA, Florida - Multiple sources tell 10 News Buccaneers great and NFL Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon has died after suffering a stroke Friday afternoon at his home in Tampa.

10 News has confirmed Selmon was unconscious and not breathing when first-responders arrived and took him to the hospital.

Family members in Selmon's home state of Oklahome have started traveling to Florida after receiving word of the stroke.

Selmon was the first-ever draft pick for the expansion Buccaneers in 1976, after an All-American career and two national titles at the University of Oklahoma.

TAMPA, Florida - Dewey Selmon, the brother of Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend Lee Roy Selmon, tells 10 News Friday evening that the NFL Hall-of-Famer is currently alive and in serious condition. He says his brother is "showing signs of progress" after suffering a stroke Friday at his home in Tampa.

However, some reports - including a press release from Selmon's namesake restaurant chain - have indicated the 56-year-old had died.

It turns out, it was Selmon's own people that made the death announcement on both Twitter and in an official press release.

After word of Selmon's stroke began to spread through the media, a member of the public relations staff at Lee Roy Selmon's restaurant in Tampa issued a press release to several local media outlets, and sent out several tweets to thousands of followers, saying "Lee Roy Selmon passes away at age 56." While several of the original tweets have been deleted, one follower on Twitter managed to grab a screenshot.
