Missouri lawmakers seek to end tax break for poor

JEFFERSON CITY | A Missouri tax break benefiting poor disabled and elderly people who live in rental housing could be on the chopping block when lawmakers convene Tuesday in a special session.

The elimination of the tax break for renters is projected to save the state $855 million over the next 15 years. Some lawmakers hope to redirect that money for new tax breaks intended to lure Chinese cargo planes to the St. Louis airport and more businesses to Missouri.

Advocates for senior citizens and the disabled vow to fight the repeal. But they may face a tough battle. The tax break repeal is the single largest budgetary savings being proposed to offset the new business incentives.

Closing tax loopholes for highly profitable corporations in MO like Bass Pro Shops who no longer need tax incentives which they received when they were just beginning and are now hugely profitable. Monsanto could also be included in that group along with 3-M. Missouri has already virtually ended Medicaid by regulating it to the point of extinction with a plan called "spend-down"...which is a joke. The disabled making $800/mo would have to pay medical bills till they went over $200 in a month...then Medicaid would kick in. Now they want to end a yearly tax break which is always spent immediately...stimulating the economy immediately...and being a life saver for the poor being able to pay their bills.

"While we're not very happy with the elimination of some provisions that help people in need, we've got to get our people to work if we're ever going to have enough money in the state coffers again to support human need issues," said Herb Johnson, secretary-treasurer of the Missouri AFL-CIO, which has joined the Missouri Chamber Commerce and Industry in backing the plan.

Hey, I get the need for jobs but since when is it okay to do it on the backs of the poor, elderly, disabled and others who'll be really hurt by this. Damn, we've become a cruel country! This is on top of LIHEAP and other cutbacks -- the big picture is increasingly leading to suffering and death for many, many affected people as prices for everything rise and those who can least withstand all of these cutbacks are the most affected.

They also decided against doing the same for homeowners, saying that they pay property taxes. Um, they don't think that landlords include paying for the property taxes in the rent? Of course they do -- they'd be foolish not to. So renters are paying property taxes AND getting screwed by losing this tax break. Pure discrimination IMO.

The Democratic governor is now behind this if services for the elderly (e.g.) receive greater support. I call total bullshit. It's not just elderly who are affected -- a wide swath of people are affected by this and there's no way in this day of cutbacks that there will be anything that will compensate for the lost of much needed cold hard cash!

Seventy-five-year-old Minnie May used her farming background to make a vivid & perfect analogy:

"When one chicken plucks a feather out of another chicken, all the other chickens do too until there's nothing left of the chicken," May said. "And that's just what these lawmakers are doing, they're taking one feather off at a time until the elderly and disabled have nothing. And there's just no need of it, absolutely no need of it."
