GOP stalls confirmation of consumer agency nominee

President Obama's nominee to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau vowed to be accountable to Congress, but his confirmation was stalled by Republicans who worried more about the power of the position than who fills it.

At a Senate Banking Committee hearing Tuesday, GOP members cordially greeted former Ohio Atty. Gen. Richard Cordray but cautioned that there was little he could do to overcome the nearly unanimous opposition by Senate Republicans to filling a job they believed was far too powerful.

"I'm sure that you have a good background ... but you're caught between a big substantive debate," Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) told him. "And that's going to have to be resolved, I think, before we move this nomination farther."

The stalemate over confirmation of a director is preventing the agency, which began operations in July, from exercising all the new authority granted to it by last year's sweeping reform of financial regulations.

The Senate Republicans are basically refusing to confirm anyone because they don't believe the Consumer Protection Agency should exist. This is why it would have been a complete waste to appoint Elizabeth Warren, because the Senate Republicans are not going to confirm anyone. If the Senate had approved Condray promptly, then there might be some basis for saying that President Obama should have appointed Elizabeth Warren. But, instead, as Shelby admits, they are just going to sit on this nomination.

...Yet, the corporate media dismisses this as the President being partisan. President Obama appointed Elizabeth Warren to set up the agency, yet you say he has not fought back?

He supported and fought for Financial Reform, which includes the consumer protection agency, yet you say he has not fought back?

It is amazing how folks just spam attacks on a Democratic President that simply ignore reality. Ironically, if President Obama simply did nothing, yet issued impressive sounding liberal sounding talking points while refusing to compromise, some folks claim that they would hold him in higher regard. Yet, this is not true.

The fact of the matter is that the American people, including liberals, give Republicans a free pass. Here Republicans are sitting on a nomination, and do you blame them? Of course not.

Regardless of how outrageous Republicans act, even the left will back them, not the President. It is a sad truth that your post illustrates.

would never be approved, but she chose to stay to help set it up? That's the impression I got from some interview with her I saw.

THIS is an issue that needs to be taken to the people. And Warren could present it better than anyone.
