It was weird...was in a meeting and I heard the AC kind of rev down and up a bit...lights dimmed then up the everything went out. Ran into our Data Center to check the UPSs. By the time I got there the generator had kicked in. Now I'm stuck at work until the power comes back up. Need to be here in case we need to have the fuel refilled for the generator. Hopefully it won't be that long!

12. My heart goes out to my friends in San Diego county!
Evidently the cell towers are working, for some at least, who have texted into this web site.

Does this have anything to do with the nuke plant in San Onofre, (between San D and Los Angeles)?

I don't want to start rumors, San Onofre doesn't supply ALL power in that area, only a relatively small amount.

This sounds like a major transmission line tripped off overloads on other supply lines by over burdening them with demand.

What's the weather like there today? Sunny and exceptionally warm 90 .. (San Diego is often in 70's)

Maybe the high temps and demand for power tripped it off.

Edited on Thu Sep-08-11 07:19 PM by David Sky
That's unusual for the city, not so unusual 20 miles inland. But I think there's probably an overload of power demand due to high temps in downtown and coastal areas.

Sorry that SD lacks a real news radio station. KOGO is the local Rush Limbaugh station and has in this current daypart (3-6PM) Roger Hedgecock, former mayor turned right wing blatherer. I wonder if KNX (a real news station) up in LA is covering this if you can receive it down there or maybe listen online.

38. And you forgot: Roger Hedgecock - former prison inmate
It's part of the right-wing radio resume.

I called my mother in South San Diego (Otay Mesa), a few miles north of the Mexican Boarder, and as reported, the lights were out in her neighborhood also. She says that it has been hot, which is not normal for San Diego. That could be what caused the blackout? Though most people near the coast don't have AC.

http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2011/09/power_outage_diego_oc_angeles_heat.php

A power outage affecting all of San Diego County has been reported today, and now we're seeing tweets that the lights have gone out in Dana Point, Laguna Niguel and Mission Viejo. : The San Diego Union-Tribune now says this thing goes from Arizona to Baja Califorina to South Orange County. We're estimating that if all of San Diego and TJ are out this could potentially affect 5 million people.

32. Blackout shuts down San Onofre nuclear reactors
The blackout affecting large swaths of San Diego County led to a shutdown of two reactors at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison, said the power outage did not cause any safety issues. Alexander said a fluxation in power caused the reactors to shut down at 3:38 p.m. but that the overall plant continues to have power.

He said the system worked as it was supposed to during a loss of power.

Across San Diego, businesses are closed, traffic is snarled and the trolley system is down. San Diego International Airport was on backup generators.

35. KPBS News release on web site:
SDG&E Loses Power In Entire System; Million Affected-Residents Urged To Remain Home
BY KPBS
Originally published September 8, 2011 at 4:24 p.m., updated September 8, 2011 at 5:13 p.m.
SAN DIEGO — A major transmission line supplying power to massive Southern California went down at about 3:38 PM, leaving millions of people in the region without power.

A San Diego Gas and Electric spokesman said at a news conference that they do not have an estimate as to when power will be restored. Some customers may be out for days.

Officials do not know the cause at this time, but do not believe it is related to terrorism.

The sudden loss of electricity led to numerous reports of people stuck in elevators, serious traffic jams caused by the loss of traffic signals throughout the region and serious confusion.

There are media reports of outgoing flights grounded at San Diego Int'l Airport, emergency personnel are being called into work, police officers are being deployed to intersections and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders has activated the Emergency Operations Center, usually reserved for major disasters, like wildfires.

The San Diego Trolley has also been shut down and many stores have closed because they cannot process sales through their cash register.

San Diego State University has cancelled classes for the day & sirens were heard wailing on the campus at about 4:45 PM for several minutes.

We will update as soon as more information is available. For more immediate updates, follow the KPBS News Twitter account: @kpbsnews

37. AP: "Power out for millions in Calif., Ariz., Mexico"
By JULIE WATSON - Associated Press | AP – 4 mins 50 secs ago

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A power outage is affecting millions of people across southern California, Arizona and Mexico. San Diego Gas & Electric Co. Darcel Hulce said that crews Thursday believe the outage was caused by a system breakdown and assured people it was not the result of a terror attack.

All outgoing flights from San Diego's Lindbergh Field have been halted and police stations are using generators to accept emergency calls.

The outage that started shortly before 4 p.m. PDT extends from San Clemente, Calif. to San Diego to Yuma, Arizona. It also is affecting cities south of the border across much of the state of northern Baja.

Hulce says power may not be returned until Friday.

The grid is supposed to compensate for this, it didn't. Something got overloaded or shorted that wouldn't have if there were enough spent on infrastructure of the power grid in this country.

65. Which is why the power grid is supposed to have redundancies
So "shit happens" doesn't black out the entire southwest border for 7 hours. The power infrastructure has been ignored by the private companies that were entrusted to maintain it, only to pocket their profits and let it dilapitate. Expect more "shit happens" until people die by the thousands because nobody is paying attention right now.

66. Get off your soapbox.
In this case "redundancy" would have meant an entire backup grid. Not feasible, not practical.

Anyway, you're really just axe-grinding against those bad old companies, when you haven't presented
one whit of evidence of malfeasance. You ARE aware that they're regulated, yes?

Please don't respond until you can prove your assertions.

69. Dream on dreamer
Redundancy does not mean an entire backup grid, it means that the power grid can re-align itself when a part goes out because of "shit happens". Stop sticking up for the weak power grid in this country and start standing up for the jobs that would happen to update it and keep it modern as opposed to the slacking and foot dragging that will eventually plunge some city into a days long blackout that will kill thousands.

This is not a "soapbox"......it is a fact, our power grid is woefully maintained. Why don't you go look it up on google.......it's everywhere. Now go stick up for the power companies somewhere else, your shtick is getting old here.

BTW, it's just after 7:00 AM here. I haven't read the newspaper yet, and I have absolutely no idea what triggered yesterday's power outage.

But I can say with certainty that partisans of all stripes will find a way to blame it on partisans of other stripes, no matter what actually happened. I'm just stating a fact. There is no outrage here at all. I'm just glad the power is back on, and that I didn't lose any perishable food or run out of beer before it ended.

49. I am only going to comment about this from a very rural America perspective
my electric service is "iffy" at best

This week, we have had 4 "blackouts."

That means that everyone within a 30 mile radius has lost power and waited for - oh - however long - until, the power came back on.

How does that feel, you ask?

Well, in the middle of the day - when attempting to work - everything stops.

Stops.

If you have a hardwired telephone, you can still talk to someone. If there is also a cellphone, you can talk to 2 people simultaneously. If you are doing research on the internet, it stops.

If it is at night, you sleep. If it is in the evening, you can light an oil lamp and have the "amish" experience.

Yawn.

All I can say is:

Get used to it. Power comes - power goes. If you are on the "grid," you are subject to power loss.

Figure out if you are part of the problem or part of the solution.

What is the solution, you ask?

Well, that is part of the problem and we need to figure out why we have decided to be so dependent on power. Be powerful. Stop being part of the problem. Stop being dependent on something - someone - to deliver your power.

Stay safe.

50. Stop being dependent on power?
A city is about civilization and interdependence.

In a city, you depend on things. In fact, that's the point --it is also the beauty of it.

You see it as a negative to depend on somebody --it's not, in fact it's the very point of civilization.

51. I understand that
How do you deal with the loss of power - in our case - 4 times in the past 5 days?

We pay a high price for our utilities, but they find we are "too expensive" to maintain. What happens to the cities when the utility companies find that for them?

Is this the future?

Just askin'.

52. I don't know but I do know that the next step isn't everyone trying to fend
If you're in a dense urban area, in an apartment, in multiresident complexes, etc. it's not feasible to just fend for oneself.

And the reflexive, American-style, individualist approach when solving the problems for everybody gets difficult --it makes the problems even more difficult to solve.

I understand if you're in the countryside you can have a diesel generator, solar panels, and seemingly do have to fend for yourself.

But to suggest that because of infrastructure failures we need to rely on ourselves, that's just giving up on society...oh, there may be a point where that actually is a consideration, but not after some power failures.

That's my frustration.

53. this is a huge discussion in our household
how do we - as a nation - deal with the corporative ownership of our power?

Do we attempt become self-sufficient (almost impossible and very expensive)

or, do we just sit back and buy oil lamps and candles?

There is so much not working in our world right now - how do we - or when do we - collectively or individually - find a way to make it work differently?

We take it back from them or we deserve what we get.

64. Link to the transcript of Obama's Address inside:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/09/08/address-president-joint-session-congress

The media in SD county is doing a piss poor job of reporting on Obama's speech. It's as if it never happened.
