Rick Perry Skips Press Conference on Texas Wildfires Without Notice

By IBTimes Staff Reporter | September 11, 2011 4:13 PM EDT

Gov. Rick Perry unexpectedly skipped a press conference regarding the state of the Texas wildfires on Saturday, a move that may have added fuel to the criticism surrounding his handling of the disaster.

Perry was scheduled to speak at a conference in Bastrop County, Tex. but reportedly canceled after there was a last minute change in the location of the event, Allison Castle, a spokeswoman for the governor, told reporters after the briefing. Another Perry spokeswoman, Catherine Frazier, claimed that by the time the briefing was rescheduled Perry would not have made it on time without having to make the attendees wait, The Texas Tribune Reports.

However, the press was notified about the change and still made it to the news conference. They were not informed that Perry would be a no-show until they arrived, according to multiple reports.

Guess he had something more important to do.

1. I'll bet he had no answers to questions he knew would be asked.

2. Just asking, but how is something that happened on Saturday
Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 11:16 PM by TheDebbieDee
late breaking news on Sunday evening?

Already today, many here at DU think the Governor's decision to skip the news conference will kill his campaign. I disagree - I think repukes put blinders on when it comes to their candidates.

24. I beat Raw Story and bigdarryl's reporting on our bum of a Governor.

I freely admit I'm taking his run for president a bit personal.

25. I remember your thread
I guess I didn't look back far enough. I really thought the first posting of this story on DU was on Saturday. Yeah, I know what you mean- it was bad enough having a fake Texas cedar chopper and now we are faced with the prospect of a coyote shooting jogger in cowboy boots. YEEHAW!!!!Talk about your mavericky dudes.

6. Some do, but I don't think Perry is the Republican establishment's candidate.
I think Romney is.

20. Even the Republicons don't want another AWOL quitter type
so Perry going AWOL -- after he ass canned Texas firefighters and thereby allowed the devastating fires to rampage unchecked -- will not earn him any brown nose points in Lone Star Republi-BaggerVille.

It just makes it too damn apparent about the Republicon track record for meekly following AWOL quitter types.

4. "Do you know who I am?": Quote from the Gov' to a DPS trooper that actually...
..DID know who he was, and still proceeded to give his driver a ticket for going 90 mph.

16. Texas is now one of Perry's 'old' friends. He is now running around with his 'new' friends
His old friends are such an embarrassment to a Presidential candidate. Perry's new friends however are much more with the in crowd and can propel him onto the national scene. Sacrificing old friends is a price a conservative has to pay to become President.

28. Perry's new campaign song
(With apologies to Dobie Gray)

I'm in with the "in" crowd;
I go where the "in" crowd goes.
I'm in with the "in" crowd;
And I know what the "in" crowd knows.
Any time of the year, don't you hear?
Dressin' fine, makin' time.
I get big bucks from the cats on Wall Street;
I get respect from the banksters I meet.
They lay the bucks on me every day and night;
They know the "in" crowd is out of sight.

I'm in with the "in" crowd;
I know every latest dance.
When you're in with the "in" crowd,
It's so easy to unzip your pants!
Any time of the year, don't you hear?
If it's square, I ain't there.
I make every fundraiser count;
My share is always the biggest amount.

Other candidates may imitate us,
But the original is still the greatest.
In crowd!

Any time of the year, don't you hear?
Spendin' cash, talkin' trash.
I'll show you a real good time,
If you give enough bucks to me and mine.
So reach deep into your pockets, amen,
And give, give, give, give, give to be in---
With the in crowd.
With the in crowd.
In crowd!
In crowd!

8. Oh well. He was thinking of more important things, like being the president of the united states!
I'm sure he's very excited about that. Fires? Oh, terrible tragedy. But he's going to be the president and that is just so exciting.

Yeah. Like going to beg the President and Congress for Federal Disaster Area money.

If I were Obama, I would make a very special trip to Austin, with one of those great big cardboard checks made out to Texas Wildfire Relief Fund, and the first thing out of my mouth would be "I'm from The Government, and I'm here to HELP." and I would see if Rocks-for-Brains has the moxy to cash the check (or not). Either way, it would be a win for the President, a win for Government (generally) and a huge embarrassment for the vaunted "Texas Miracle Worker"

13. Like Bush's behavior during Katrina.

It's a good thing he's showing this to his home state before the election. However, Repubs and conservatives want somebody to beat Obama so bad I'm afraid they'd still nominate and elect him with phony grins glued to their faces while lying through their teeth that is wrong with this guy. Just like they did with Bush until Katrina.

that before...:eyes:

Seems to me that as far as lame excuses during a major tragedy go, that's about as lame as it gets. The people of his beloved TX suffer immensely, but he can't find the means to address the situation...:wtf:

27. What, he missed a photo opportunity?
Maybe he was trying to pass a letter to Obama again. Thought
his committee would have known better than have even tried
that one but what do they know about being presidential.
Wonder what he thinks of global warming. It does not take a
scientist to look around on Texas right now and see we have a
problem. Not putting the blame on him for our drought but you
don't deny our global is not changing.
