Bush Effort Targets Cervical Cancer in Developing World

By BETSY MCKAY
George W. Bush is making the first major foray of his post presidency into global health, with a partnership to combat cervical and breast cancer in the developing world.

Mr. Bush was widely applauded for establishing the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which has spent nearly $32 billion since 2004. It put more than 3.2 million people on AIDS drugs through September 2010, and it funds HIV testing and counseling for nearly 33 million people a year.

Now, his George W. Bush Institute is forming a public-private partnership to use the AIDS-relief plan's huge infrastructure of doctors, nurses, and clinics to expand screening and treatment of women for cervical cancer as well as breast-cancer education.

The goal of the partnership, also made up of the U.S. State Department, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, is to reduce the number of cervical cancer deaths by 25% in five years in countries where it scales up screening and treatment. Its initial investment will be $75 million.

"Too many women are needlessly dying," Mr. Bush said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "We think we can make a measurable difference."

Seems it was only yesterday:
"Too many OB/GYN’s aren’t able to practice their love with women all across the country."

— George W. Bush

5. Skittles, follow the money, lots to be made with vaccines, etc. Wonder if this...
...benefits some friends or investments of GW. Carlyle Group have a handle in this? I remember a chart of the various industries, Oil made 12% profit, but the next, and the highest was the pharmaceutical industry, at 18% profit. This is just the profit that they will admit to, they make a lot of this, overseas, where they are less accountable.

14. Of course!
Anybody who thinks any repig, ESPECIALLY ex-President cheney's spokesman shrub, cares about humans is completely deluded. It is just a way to shovel public money (taxes) into the pockets of his rich buddies at Big Pharma.

2. Too bad he and his party spends a lot of time trying to deny access for
American women the ability to get screening and check ups because they want to play "abortion/ fundy" politics for elections.

4. Yes, never send a war criminal to due humanitary work.

Especially one with the management history of Bush.

But maybe he won't harm a good cause too much.

However, given the staff he appoints, maybe he can. If he brings Neil in to help, he needs to be sacked quick.

6. Condoms would go a long way to help prevent
...but considering how the bush* administration's foreign aide money was on the condition of no condoms allowed, how good of him now to seem like he gives a flying leap about suffering people. In fact, any type of "philanthropy" from him is like a sick freaking joke.

8. Exactly. Being anti-condom at the same time as anti-cerical cancer is ridiculous.
What a hoax.

7. bush is probably peddling vaccines. I know Rumsfeld had interest in a drug company
--one of the ones who got a waiver from any kind of liability for their effects on soldiers.

9. Bush on the lecture circuit - endless hotels with room service booze to drink in private
Bush will enjoy travel, luxury hotels, and the best liquor money can buy. Only it will be someone else's money doing the buying.

11. a couple points:
Anytime a Bush says "We can make a difference" you need to run away fast and far.

Second: What do you want to be he never leaves the US while pushing this ruse.

13. Terrible News
I wish he would pick something else to tinker with in his retirement. We all know that everything he touches turns to shit. I don't trust him. There has to be some kind of money angle to this.

15. Cervical cancer has been linked to HPV
Human Papilloma Virus.
Genital warts, that is.

There are vaccines for Some HPVs available now; I don't know how effective they are against either the virus or cancer. I don't think that any specific vaccine is good against all variants.

Seems to me he's trying to re-polish his image whilst shilling for Big Pharma, but it could lead to incidental good, despite his cynical 'miming.
