Elizabeth Warren Officially Launching Senate Campaign Against Scott Brown
Edited on Tue Sep-13-11 02:20 PM by kpete
Source: Talking Points Memo

Former White House financial reform adviser Elizabeth Warren will officially launch her campaign for U.S. Senate from Massachusetts on Wednesday, challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Scott Brown.

“The pressures on middle class families are worse than ever, but it is the big corporations that get their way in Washington,” Warren said in a statement. “I want to change that. I will work my heart out to earn the trust of the people of Massachusetts.”

Warren has been exploring a run in recent weeks, and has been on a listening tour of the state.

Brown was elected to the Senate in a special election in January 2010, following the death of long-time Sen. Ted Kennedy, in a stunning upset against Democratic state Attorney General Martha Coakley. A recent survey showed Brown leading the lesser-known Warren by 44%-35%, but with the incumbent below the crucial 50% mark in a state that is expected to vote Democratic by a wide margin in the presidential race.

30. like dictatorships of every variety - label all intellectuals as "reactionaries" -
then abuse them to the grave, with death squads, prisons & labor camps.

Liberals need to pound the message into these evil, stupid, fascist scum:
Liberal = living in reality (to paraphrase Stephen Colbert);
Liberal = common sense;
Liberal does not mean impractical, philosophical hypotheses.
And, Socialism does not equal dictatorships.

it is nigh impossible to deal politely & reasonably with the venomous predator class - see how well that worked out for Obama. the sociopathic right-wing has to be crushed & driven back to the figurative jungles they were spawned & belong in; they are unable to operate by the rules of decent civilized society. these are the scum who cheer throwing sick people into the streets, to die; and cheer the bombing of innocent foreigners to smithereens, just to satisfy their bloodlust for illogical feelings of revenge -directed against people who never caused them harm.

We need people with the public exposure and the guts - people just like Elizabeth Warren & Alan Grayson - to crush these dumb, arrogant, vicious swine, with facts & logic & reasoned rhetoric.

i am so happy this Lady is running for office.

38. Why not? Word was that she didn't want the position and that she was going to run for Senate.
Barney Frank was trying to get people to calm down over it because he had an idea of what she wanted to do. And yet everyone still said Obama was throwing her under the bus by not appointing her. If he did that and she refused it would've looked bad politically speaking.

40. i haven't heard her say anything in public - or private - about her not wanting the position.
in fact, when she came on The Daily Show, for an extended interview with Jon Stewart, she never mentioned a thing about not wanting the job. Although, to be fair, the question of whether she was to be the head of the consumer agency - never surfaced either.

what i gathered from that interview, and from her comments on other occasions, was that - she was so gung ho for that agency, she would relish the prospect of being its head. but again - that's just my opinion. i don't know of any actual statements by her, for or against it.

the Barney Frank comment had been discussed & rejected, right here on DU, as a valid indication of Ms. Warren not wanting to serve as the consumer agency chief. i don't have the time & inclination now, to go search for those links - but, if you care to do so, i'm sure you'll find them quite readily.

cheers.

56. Wait, Barney's quote was rejected?
He said http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/16/warren-didnt-want-permane_n_719932.html">outright, "She always said she didn't want to be there as a permanent director. Some of the liberals are worried about it. It's almost an insult to Elizabeth. She wouldn't take this if there was the slightest impediment to her doing the job." I don't know how it could be rejected. Could you explain why this quote is wrong?

To be honest I would be shocked to have a quote from Warren where she claimed she wanted to run it, we already know the agency will be weakened depending on the whims of Congress, and she doesn't need to be there playing in a system that is going to just fester. The agency exists and she can do better by strengthening it in Congress, and eventually the Presidency.

know who she is and what she's about... She'll be pulling the Dems and Indies out so the President will benefit from her running for Senate... Isn't that ironic when he wouldn't appoint her for the agency she pushed for and created. We are better off having her make legislation in the Senate.. She can re-enforce the power and heft of her Baby from their.

76. Elizabeth Warren enters Mass. Senate race
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren promised to advocate for middle-class families squeezed by big corporations as she enters Massachusetts' Democratic primary, hoping to best a crowded field vying to challenge incumbent Republican Scott Brown for his Senate seat.

Warren is to kick off her campaign greeting Boston commuters on Wednesday morning, then travel to other cities across the state to meet voters.

"The pressures on middle-class families are worse than ever, but it is the big corporations that get their way in Washington," Warren said in a statement released Tuesday announcing her bid. "I want to change that. I will work my heart out to earn the trust of the people of Massachusetts."

Warren was heavily courted to join the race. Democrats have been seeking a major challenger for the seat long held by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy. Hoping to hold on to their narrow Senate majority, Democrats have made Brown a top target in the blue state. Kennedy's former seat has special significance for Massachusetts Democrats.

81. If she actually goes out and campaigns, she should be fine
The reason we have a Repuke in Ted Kennedy's seat is Martha Coakley decided the voters would just choose her because of the (D) by her name.

I have no doubt Elizabeth Warren knows this, and will campaign in the proper manner--which means pressing flesh at Bruins, Red Sox and Patriots games.

82. Someone said that Coakley would "rather eat ground glass than campaign".
He was right. She reportedly sniffed at Scott Brown campaigning at Fenway Park, "in all that cold." She threw the election away: the worst example of political malpractice I've ever witnessed. Two+ years later, I'm still furious about the whole thing.
I assume that no MA democrat will ever make that mistake again.

83. She was shaking hands at the T in the morning and then off to Springfield.
And she was on TV like mad.

I think she's willing to campaign. She will have to plow through a primary field too, which will be a good test. There will be debates!
