NYT: Disdain for Bush* Simmers in Democratic Strongholds
DES MOINES, July 31 — While Democratic leaders in Washington debate strategy and demographics for the 2004 election — the wisdom of campaigning from the left, right or center — something far more visceral is at work in the first caucus state, and in other Democratic redoubts.

There is a powerful disdain for the Bush administration, stoked by the aftermath of the war in Iraq and the continuing lag in the economy. There is also a conviction that President Bush is eminently beatable, and a hunger to hear their party's leaders and candidates make the case against him — straight up, from the heart rather than the polling data.

It is not simply a lurch to the left, many Democrats say; it could, in fact, lead caucus voters to more centrist candidates, if they seem most likely to defeat Mr. Bush in the general election.

(snip)

Geoff Garin, a pollster who is working for Senator Bob Graham of Florida, who is seeking the Democratic nomination, said the Democratic anger toward Bush is "as strong as anything I've experienced in 25 years now of polling," and perhaps comes closest to the way many Democrats felt about President Richard M. Nixon.

1. George W. Bush
The most despicable, the most amoral, the most corrupt human being ever to sit in that office in 214 years.

11. Being propped up by the GOP media. Why someone doesn't sue
the media for collusion I'll never know!

Why isn't Junior forced to take a lie detector test on topics like 9/11 was Junior warned, why did Junior read children's books as America was being attacked, why were so many CEOs at Offutt Air Force base to meet Junior on 9/11, Enron, Baxter assassination, Wellstone assassination, Kelly assassination, Ordering Saddam's sons executed, Harken, Texas Rangers Stadium, AWOL, cheating on Yale exams, did his wife murder her lover in high school, did Junior sell drugs out of the Lincoln Bedroom during his father's term, what is the Bush Family relation to judge Thomas, was Junior 14 years old when he began using THC which lead to cocaine and continued use for 20 straight years, why did't Junior ever fly overseas a (phobic psychological disorder...

15. Maybe because there's no such thing as suing for collusion.

2. Maybe this will give the Vichy Dems in Washington a clue
But somehow I doubt it. That would mean they'd actually have to act like an opposition party, which many of them find unpallatable.

4. Rove will just send Loserman
out on the talk show circuit to reapeat his barbs "the Dems are all soft on defense, want to raise taxes, big spenders, liberals" :eyes:

I hope Dean calls a special press conference, just to blister Rove's errand boy.

Dean needs to start pounding OSP and PNAC a little more.

3. a very encouraging article
I highly recommend people go read the whole thing. If the Dems aren't seeing that their base is really motivated to get * out of there, at least Robin Toner sees and understands what's going on. And that means, sooner or later, so will the serious candidates. :bounce:

7. Thanks for posting this, kskiska
This story really made my day. It's great to see the excitement at the grassroots and a belief Bush is vulnerable. And the voters sound like they're really focused on finding the best possible candidate we can. BTW, I've also never felt this much antipathy toward a Repuke president. I didn't like Reagan but I didn't despise him the way I'd Bush. Anyone else think it ironic that Bush has the same efffect on Dems that Clinton had on conservatives?

8. The disdain I personally have for George W. Bush is far greater
than that anger I felt toward Nixon-or, any other Republican president in my lifetime! No one else even comes close!

Moreover, Bush's *entire* family of politcal hacks-along with his current corrupt administration-are all an abomination in my eyes. These morally bankrupt, thieving, murderous, and disgusting fascist creatures are nothing but vermin-spreading filth and disease whereever they go across America and around the world! It's time they return to the sewer where they all belong! Every last one of them!

9. I did not learn much reading that article
It was an account of the small number of people who are democratic activists. Further, it led to feeling that "we need to nominate the candidate who could best beat Bush". That should go without saying in any electoral primary process.

34. Agreed
Arduing to look for the "strongest dem most likly to beat Bush" is just more pandering to the poll data. The DLC thinks the people want a centrist. They are wrong, they want some one to stand up to Bush and the GOP.

13. First Priority
Our first priority is to replace the current administration. Those of us who are Progressive (left) will vote for the Democratic candidate, even if he or she is centrist. For any candidate to win, the independent vote is crucial. Remember, ANY Democrat will appoint better judges and have better policies than the current administration. Personally, I am supporting Dean, but will definitely vote for Lieberman if he is nominated.

Maybe worse, since he claims to be a Democrat.

He's a traitor of the worst kind, a spineless coward who will say anything to get elected.

19. The BEST part of the article:
"For the past two and a half years, after all, a fairly consistent 38 percent of respondents in The New York Times/CBS News Poll have said that Mr. Bush was not legitimately elected president.'

I know we know, but it's still nice to see truth in print. :)

20. We want anyone willing to call a spade a spade.
Better yet, in Bush's case, a bloody shovel.

This is news? This requires the Times to figure out we're waiting for a candidate who will stand up to these lying bullies?

Geesh. Them media types is just a little bit slow.

Oh, I get it. They think we're over it. They think that Florida isn't a huge pustule of rage waiting to burst. They've convinced themselves we didn't mind.

Slow was too charitable.

23. resist all efforts....
....to portray Democratic rage as political or personal in origin.

Our rage is righteous, rooted in the most bedrock of American principles. One man, one vote. Millions of Americans have shed their scarlet blood for one man, one vote.

The Bushes attacked that pillar of democracy. They occupy the White House through deceit, cronyism, racialism, the quashing of lawful votes, thuggery, the twisting of the formerly immutable Rule of Law, and the tainting of the judiciary for personal and partisan gain. And they continue to attack the Constitution by seizing unprecedented powers for the White House at the expense of the elected Congress.

Personality and partisan politics are secondary. Deep, impassioned defense of our republic and our liberties is primary.

Don't let them trivialize our righteous rage.

37. And it isn't just confined to America
I presently reside in Australia and I have never before seen so much contempt, disdain and utter disgust with a US President than what I am witnessing with the present occupant. Absolutely everyone I know here in Australia -whether they be conservative, liberal, centrist or politiclaly non-affiliated -hate GWB with a passion. Friends I know who liked and respected the father can't stand the son. It's amazing
