Current TV adds another former MSNBC host to line-up

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Current TV has claimed another former MSNBC host: Cenk Uygur, who previously hosted "MSNBC Live," will host "The Young Turks" ahead of Keith Olbermann's "Countdown," the network announced Tuesday.

The network will work with Uygur to develop a televised version of his online show "The Young Turks," which covers politics and pop culture. The new show will air at 7 p.m. ET.

Uygur had anchored "MSNBC Live" at 6 p.m. ET. "The Young Turks" online video segments generate about 30 million views per month and have accrued more than 500 million video views. Viewership on YouTube has grown 912 percent since July 2008.

"Cenk Uygur has a strong grasp of what audiences seek: context and insight about the news and complex issues that affect their lives, unfettered by corporate influences. He has a unique and compelling way of boiling it down for his viewers," said Current Chairman and co-founder Al Gore. "He and his collaborators have exploded in popularity because of 'The Young Turks'" authentic and passionate voice. Cenk understands that we live in a multi-screen world, and he speaks to an audience who wants to hear the truth."

I wrote CURRENT as soon as Cenk quit MSNBC to recommend that they pursue him for their lineup. I'm sure I wasn't alone with that advice. I love Rachel, Ed, O'donell et al, and I hope they continue to do what they have been. I hate to see them competeing against Keith and Current, but that's what TIVO and other such apparati are for! MORE is better!

18. I was hoping for this. Have not watched MSNBC much since the firing.

I had never watch more than a few minutes of Cenk's MSNBC show on a few occasions. The time slot was not good for me. However, MSNBC's saying they were an establishment network (and therefore he could not be as critical as he wished) was a huge turn off.

Imagine if CBS had said that to Edward R. Murrow during the McCarthy years.
