Senate Panel Approves $53B Foreign Aid Bill

A Senate panel has approved a $53 billion foreign aid bill that threatens closure of the Palestinians' office in the United States if they pursue a unilateral statehood bid at the United Nations.

The foreign aid measure would either trim or impose limitations on U.S. aid to Pakistan, a reflection of the frustration among many lawmakers about an inconsistent ally in the war on terror. The Senate Appropriations Committee approved the bill Wednesday on a 28-2 vote.

The Palestinians say they will seek statehood recognition at the U.N., defying the U.S. and Israel, which want negotiations leading to a Palestinian state.
