Voluntary pipeline move doubted (TransCanada oil sands)

LINCOLN — After meeting recently with TransCanada executives, Gov. Dave Heineman said Wednesday he doubts that the company will voluntarily reroute its controversial Keystone XL pipeline around Nebraska's groundwater-rich Sand Hills.

The governor said he had met with the president of the Canadian corporation and the head of its pipeline division within the past 10 days. That followed Heineman's decision to oppose a federal permit for the 36-inch, high-pressure crude-oil pipeline.

"I emphasized very candidly and directly that I supported a change in the route," Heineman told reporters at a press conference. "I don't think they're going to do that."

He urged Nebraskans to testify next week at a pair of federal hearings on the project.

1. Voluntarily?!
This is why we need to regulate corporations, and NOT ALLOW them free rein to do as they wish! Because when it comes down to it, all THEY care about is THEIR bottom line (not, in this case, someone elses freshwater supply).

2. I almost shat myself after
Osborne pulled NU's support, then Heineman pulled support. Kudos to them.

Heineman mustn't be looking for Koch money for his next campaign...or would this pipeline be 'competition' for Koch industries? Hmm?
