LINCOLN — After meeting recently with TransCanada executives, Gov. Dave Heineman said Wednesday he doubts that the company will voluntarily reroute its controversial Keystone XL pipeline around Nebraska's groundwater-rich Sand Hills.
The governor said he had met with the president of the Canadian corporation and the head of its pipeline division within the past 10 days. That followed Heineman's decision to oppose a federal permit for the 36-inch, high-pressure crude-oil pipeline.
"I emphasized very candidly and directly that I supported a change in the route," Heineman told reporters at a press conference. "I don't think they're going to do that."
He urged Nebraskans to testify next week at a pair of federal hearings on the project.
