Mass. GOP Urges (Harvard University President) Faust To Withhold Warren's Pay
Source: The Harvard Crimson

The Massachusetts Republican party has urged the University to withhold Harvard Law School professor Elizabeth Warren’s salary while she runs in the upcoming election for the Massachusetts Senate seat currently occupied by Scott Brown.

Warren, who announced her candidacy last week, has alternated between teaching contract law at the Law School and campaigning around the Boston area.

In the most recent polling data from Public Policy Polling, Warren, a Democrat, was leading Brown, a Republican, by 46 to 44 percent.

In a letter to University President Drew G. Faust, Nate Little, executive director of the Massachusetts GOP, expressed concern that Warren’s Senate run would detract from her academic work at Harvard, and that her ties to Harvard may suggest that the University endorses her.

10. Oh my gawd
the gopers aka tea brats are becoming more like the nazi party, taking away worker rights, women rights, voting rights, changing maps, and so forth, to anyone who isn't one of them. My way or the highway. All this dumping on democracy will backfire on the gopers aka tea brats, I'm pretty sure of that.

14. isn't this tortious interference? harvard is a private university.
nevermind that this is completely ridiculous. university presidents have run for public office while retaining their university jobs, woodrow wilson's 1910 run for governor of new jersey while president of princeton university comes to mind, i'm sure there are others.

plus it may be really stupid politics. it may just give harvard an opportunity to say, "yeah, we DO endorse her!"

saying the US Senate backs Brown - when I suspect 53% do not.

I thought the Republicans wanted people from the private sector - I have never heard anyone call for any nominee to quit their private sector job. Obviously, she may well take a sabbatical rather than teach in Fall 2012. Now, her teaching responsibilities would seem to require fewer hours than Brown's day job - and they are in Massachusetts, making it reasonable for her to have plenty of time, outside the hours she works, campaigning.

19. Those Republicans must be OK!
So, Republicans are worried "...that Warren’s Senate run would detract from her academic work at Harvard". How sweet of them. I'm impressed that Republicans can put aside politics and assure that our institutions of higher learning maintain their focus. They've always been advocates for strong education. Perhaps I've been wrong about them all this time.

Some story about 5-10 years ago reported that the Vatican was the richest private entity in the world. But Harvard University came in at #2 . As I remember, the figures were pretty close, too.

31. By that logic any incumbent congress person running for reelection
shouldn't receive his/her salary, since the run would detract them from legislative work and their ties to Congress may suggest that US Government endorses them.
So if Warren's pay should be withheld, so should Brown's.

35. I'm sure Warren worked things out with Harvard BEFORE running...
this is standard practice in academia, and usually spelled out in University regulations (or her contract). This will no doubt be counted as some sort of extended leave or sabbatical. If she is far enough along the tenure track it won't matter.

Situations like this have come up before, and obviously will come up again, so people who believe in intelligent planning have worked out the necessary guidelines and modified them as events have warranted. But don't expect Repubs to understand that. You can see their approach to advance planning in the Katrina debacle. Besides, they expect all decisions to be based on cronyism and corruption, and are always surprised to learn that other people have worked out better alternatives -- or that alternatives even exist.

37. Let's see,. what could turn people against Brown? How about the GOP cutting off Warren's paycheck?
Why yes, I think that would do it.

Bring it, fuckers.

Yes, I'm sure running for office in the same state where you work makes it impossible to teach. And I definitely know the Harvard students would not have the least interest in hearing about Warren's Washington experiences of about what it is like to run for Senate.

Go on, Harvard. Make my day. Cut 'er off.

(Psst. Liz. Not to worry about the grocery bill. I'll take up a collection, starting with the Kennedy clan. Betcha it'll be several multiples of your salary before I'm done.)

42. I went to Harvard Law and the chances that the
president of the university will do this two and slim has just left town. When I was at HLS Susan Estrich rearranged her teaching schedule for two months after she was named head of the Dukakis campaign. I know because I was in her sex-discrim class at that very time. We didn't miss any classes, either.

And in an case Harvard is a PRIVATE university that can do as it wishes. Whatta bunch of maroons.
