Rate of visa application rejection increasing: India to US
Source: Economic Times of India

23 Sep, 2011, 02.33PM IST, PTI

WASHINGTON: India today conveyed its concern to the US over the increasing number of rejections of the H1B visa applications of professionals, especially in the IT sector, who need these permits for execution of temporary onsite contracts.

The point was highlighted by visiting Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma at the CEOs Forum here.

He said, "Uptake of H1B visas this year has been less than half of annual prescribed limit and the rejection rates have gone up."

Underscoring the importance of free movement of professionals, he also asked for early signing of the India-US Totalisation Agreement.

2. Gee, I dunno, maybe we have our own unemployed here and they can fulfill any contract obligations?
The minister also invited US investors to establish National Investment and Manufacturing Zones and urged the CEO forum to suggest global best practices for the proposed townships.

Does this mean that the US is to get their own Free Trade Zones, not unlike Jamaica & Haiti?

I guess they don't need those workers there, either.

4. Dear India, The United States is a sovereign nation.
A visa is not a right. No law requires the US to provide visas to workers from India.

Thank you.

When we need you, we will call. Until then, brush up your resume.

And, by the way, our good jobs have been outsourced so maybe you should try some other country.

India has plenty of need for workers right at home - they can put their own people to work building water treatment facilities and high-speed rail.

For cripes sake, they have a space program; if India can afford that, then they can afford to put their own people to work.

FORD opens 2nd plant in India ~ 5000 jobs - Ford India opens 28 dealerships.

31. So, let me get this straight
at a Ford plant in India you expect the employees to be American, AND the profits going to US as well? Will it be ok if Toyota opened a plant in US, employed Japanese, and got the profits?

32. No, you don't understand.
We were discussing US job losses to H-1B visa holders from India. In http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=5004066&mesg_id=5004169">post #10, indio55555 claimed, "Yes free trade DOES work both ways. FORD opens 2nd plant in India ~ 5000 jobs - Ford India opens 28 dealerships."

In this context, for free trade to work both ways there needs to be parity for US workers. I don't think indio55555's example demonstrates that, do you?

11. But this is not a free trade issue
The article only states that the number of visas rejected is higher today. That can equally be caused by greater number of submissions which would, naturally, have a higher total number of rejections.

12. GOOD!!!! I say reject ALL indian H1B visa's an start TOSSING OUT H1B holders!
I'm in the IT sector, and I have a problem with this policy!
There was N E V E R a shortage of qualified people! Even during the boom, there were plenty, the problem was that they knew what they were worth and demanded it!

I say throw every fucking one of them out, and bring those jobs home!!!!!

but im not bitter or anything...

13. Simple solution ...
The H1B Visas should be tied directly to the employment figures.

If unemployment goes up, the H1B visas allowed into the states should go down.
Unemployment goes down, then H1B visas allowed into the states should go up.

Right now, until I read this story, I believe that H1B's are
constantly going up regardless of unemployment figures.

In fact, I believe that the number of H1B visas allowed into the
states is directly causing some professional to actually be unemployed.

Go figure.

14. Gosh, I thought we'd about stopped importing people
Seems like I'm always hearing about unemployed IT professionals losing their homes, going on relief or taking jobs that pay 1968 wages. So someone needs to explain why anybody's being let in for whatever reason just now. Times aren't just tough ya'll, hell they're shot. Seems like the prudent thing to do right now is suspend the whole durn visa program, pending better times, (should they ever, ever arrive again). Hate to make India mad, but oh well.

22. Unlike Latin America
India never had land stolen from it by the US, nor had it's wealth stolen. So, while I know I leap all over people doing veiled comments on hispanics, I feel no such worries about telling India to keep it's damned IT workers home! Their doctors at least provide a service, it's not like too many doctors will be a problem (especially when he start making single payer), but these H1Bastards and h1bitches are just looking to make loot and go home.

I don't know if that's an accurate stereotype but I don't see how it makes a difference anyway.
