Johannesburg - The man who headed the former apartheid government's chemical and biological warfare programme managed to reduce the charge sheet against him, but still faces losing his medical license, South African media reported on Tuesday.
The Health Professions' Council withdrew late on Monday two of the six charges of unethical conduct against Wouter Basson, a cardiologist who lead some of the country's more covert scientific research programmes during the 1980s.
The main charges left against him relate to the manufacturing of incapacitating drugs and tear gas, including weapons which were sent to Angola, where South Africa was supporting one side in the civil war.
He is also accused of helping to distribute to South African soldiers cyanide capsules so that they could commit suicide if needed, particularly when they engaged in dangerous cross-border operations.
