'L-Word' star kisses girl, gets escorted off plane
Source: Associated Press

A lesbian actress who starred in "The L-Word" said she kissed a girl — and got escorted off of a Southwest Airlines flight on Monday for doing it.

Leisha Hailey took to Twitter to call for a boycott of the carrier after a flight attendant told them other passengers had complained after witnessing the affection.

Her first tweet said: "I have been discriminated against." She later added, "Since when is showing affection to someone you love illegal?"

Southwest Airlines Co. responded on its website that Hailey was approached "based solely on behavior and not gender." The airline's four-sentence response said passengers were characterizing the behavior as excessive

1. SW is one of the most gay-friendly companies out there
I wonder how affectionate these two were in order to warrant an attendant warning them to stop?

Have you seen their gate crew? It's like a fun gay party every time I check in.

3. A fun gay party!! LOL!
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 10:51 AM by SkyDaddy7
Yes, I would say that is gay friendly! However, I have heard SW was gay friendly as well. It kinda makes me wonder if those two were showing a bit too much affection? I hate it when I see or have to sit near a straight couple that can't wait until they land & get a room...It gives me the creeps!

I know some people like to watch others get it on but I don't.

5. Get a room
I say when there's more than a little peck or brief kiss- gay or straight. Sounds like these two may have ventured beyond that. Not a prude- just find it tacky when some folks have to flaunt their affection this way.

8. I find lots of things to be tacky. However, if they don't threaten
me in some way, I look the other way if I'm bothered by them. Tacky isn't dangerous. It's just...well...tacky.

If I see something that bothers me, but doesn't threaten me, I use that feature to look in another direction. Try it. It works a treat.

11. Certainly. You can go into a room, close the door and avoid seeing things
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 12:22 PM by MineralMan
you do not wish to see at any time. If you go out, however, you join other people in public, who may have different priorities in life than you do. Unless they're breaking the law or threatening you, that is one of the features of being in public. That is why your head rotates on your neck.

20. Do they? They're classed as common carriers, I believe, and so
are limited in the right to discriminate on various grounds. I believe you may be incorrect in this. Airlines do not have any rights. People have rights. Think about the distinction for a moment or two.

21. You're correct, commercial airlines are classified as "common carriers."
That means that they are expected to serve all customers within reason, to the best of their abilities.

22. 1) Anyone that has a problem with seeing two people kiss
is in need of therapy. Their own repressed sexuality shouldn't be projected on others.

2) If they 'don't like to see it', then they don't have to STARE at it.

3) In this case, I'm pretty darn sure it wasn't the kissing that elicited complaints, but the fact that it was two women. That's what made them uncomfortable.

Until I know what kind of rating this 'kiss' had, I'm going to come down on the side of the actual victim here.

23. Where is the line?
I am not arguing one way or another.

That said, can I lick my wife all over her face? Can she grab my cock and jerk me off in my pants? Can me and the guy next to me bust out some double penetration in our row? Can we grab another guy across the aisle and make an air tight seal?

And for the record, I would love to see 2 chicks making out on my next flight.

...just had to say that!

Lefse? Lutefisk? Anyone?

:-)

Now about the story...I did note that the article attached to this post, did NOT have the quotes that the flight attendant supposedly made...about being a "family" airline.

And they were traveling from BWI to STL? And then got escorted off in STL? Weren't they getting off there anyway??

...same old, same old...just bits and pieces and everybody is spinning.

One may also enter that same room for privacy. Hence bathroom doors...

Seems to me that privacy does not deny someone else turning their head, nor turning a head denies privacy. I imagine that acting in a gracious manner towards all in view is not merely a social more, but also an ill-defined one, and that the same graciousness, if practiced by all parts rather than merely our necks, may indeed lead to more civil public interactions rather than less.

30. You may do as you please, of course.
You may not, however, tell other people what to do, unless they are breaking the law or somehow threatening you. It is precisely that simple. The onus is on you when two people are kissing each other, not on them. You may watch or choose not to watch if it is done in public. I prefer not to watch, so as to provide them some privacy. You may do as you please.

9. I guess it would depend a little ...
How were they kissing? Was it a peck on the lips, normal kiss? Or were they swallowing each others' faces?

If the former, probably discriminatory on the part of the reporting passengers, yes. If the latter, well, that'd make me a bit uncomfortable regardless of who was doing it.

12. They never eject the COMPLAINER do they?
We hear these stories regularly - peaceful passengers ejected cuz some a**wipe bigot is uncomfortable with something. Here the 'offense' is a kiss. Other times, people have been ejected for wearing a tee-shirt with writing in a ME language that they didn't know. Or praying in a native language. Or wearing a mini-skirt.

But the bigot gets to fly. On a plane they ethnically and culturally got cleansed.

18. In all fairness that is the crux of the allegation
The star claimed she was a victim of discrimination based on sexual orientation. Thus, the title seems perfectly fair at summarizes the content.

Now, if it was an article discussing her upcoming roles, I would agree. Here, I think you are trying too hard to find something wrong.

31. If they have a policy on the flight
that no one can ever kiss anyone else ever, then this is a totally reasonable response.
But most likely this is an overzeaous flight attendant and he/he will probably end up being fired or suspended/retrained after any PR firestorm.

35. I could see myself getting asked off a flight
but probably not for kissing someone.

It would likely be on the level of:

Stewardess: 'Sir, we know you passed security and are dressed appropriately in a button down shirt and pants, but...'

Me: 'Yes?'

Stewardess: 'Well, some of our other passengers are worried that being a barbarian, you may still be carrying a large axe or something.'

Me: 'Are they worried I would attack them?'

Stewardess: 'Not them themselves, but they are worried you may not understand how a plane works and attack the aircraft itself.'

Me: 'Are they serious?'

Stewardess: 'Well, have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately? Also, there is a young boy crying as this is a night flight and the moon is supposed to be full. He thinks you are going to change into werewolf and eat him.'

Me: 'Can't you tell the kid that it is lots of fun being a werewolf?'

Stewardess (now shuddering): 'Off, now!'
