Sharpton to march with labor and civil rights leaders for Obama jobs bill
Source: The Washington Post

The Rev. Al Sharpton is planning a march next month to bolster the president’s jobs bill and bring attention to the plight of the unemployed.

The march, which will draw labor groups and civil rights organizations, is expected to bring thousands to the Mall on the day before the new memorial honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is officially dedicated, organizers said.

Sharpton — who is a civil rights activist, nightly TV host and staunch Obama ally — painted the march on Oct. 15 as an answer to Obama’s call to mobilize behind the jobs proposal he introduced two weeks ago and also as a refutation of the president’s critics.

“We will bring forth the masses who have not been heard in the midst of the jobs debate,” said Sharpton, who was flanked by leaders of the National Education Association, NAACP and other groups. “As the president fights for a jobs act, as supercommittees meet, they need to hear marching feet. This is to send a message to Congress.”

1. I think Rev. Sharpton is awsome.
I remember seeing him (by surprise) at a hotel in Sacramento in 2004. This was when Dr. Dean was seeking DNC post and Rev. Sharpton was supporting a VP candidate. Everybody came to hear Dr. Dean, naturally. But it was an absolute surprise to hear the speaker tell the crowd to please welcome Rev. Al Sharpton. He didn't give one of his barn burner speeches, but he did ignite the crowd. He is someone I could get behind anytime he needs supporters. Labor, wages, voting rights, etc. I would do it.

Americans! I have nothing but admiration for him!

5. Perhaps he knows that our trade figures are much better with "free trade" countries than
with the rest of the world.

Plus he probably looks at the bill as a whole rather than the parts of it that he disagrees with.

7. I look at the bill and I see Chamber of Commerce, Free trade has been killing us.
Right wingers have been trying to sell it to me for years, but I have seen the results.
Same thing with Reaganomics that never work but keep being sold over and over again.

I noticed the Bush tax breaks didn't do as well as advertised but people keep selling that anyway.

I am not buying any of this:http://www.uschamber.com/sites/default/files/110905_jobs_letter.pdf

8. How do you figure that "Free trade has been killing us" if our trade figures are much better
with "free trade" countries than with the rest of the world. Unless you believe that all trade is bad, why would you want to single out the trade that we do best?

None of us "have seen the results" because Reaganomics never did work. His tax cuts for the rich helped them but not the rest of us. His union busting worked for the rich but not for the rest of us. His attacks on the safety net worked for the rich but not for the rest of us. His deregulation of Wall Street and corporations worked for the rich but not for the rest of us.

Reagan "talked the talk" of free trade, but he did not "walk the walk". His first and only "free trade" agreement was in the last year of his administration in 1988. It was with - horror of all horrors - that progressive country to the north, Canada.

Ask any liberal in Europe or Canada and they'll tell you that your country and its middle class don't stand a chance when your government pursues a broad policy of something like Reaganomics. They know that trade (which they have a lot more of then we do, including "free trade") is a good thing, but only if you don't destroy your middle class with everything that Reagan and his conservative cronies and successors did.

9. I know people make more money on trade, but the working class loses the jobs to other countries
I guess we just have a different definition of "us", working class blue collar people are more important to me than the b ottom lines of corporations that hoard cash, layoff workers and shelter profits from taxes.

It is a good sell job you are doing, stick to your brochure, I heard all that before and watched plants close here to be re-opened in mexico back during the last big sell of this.

You are not quite as good as other's who have been selling right wing policies, but we all have to start somewhere I guess. I am still not buying, I am not a right winger.

If free trade is so damn good why did even The President run on trying to fix the earlier trade agreements that had "shipped jobs overseas"?

What you fail to see is that this deal is full of "bipartisan" Reaganomics, 80% of the Chamber of commerce recommendations and tax cuts.
This is more of the same stuff that doesn't work, with the exception of a very small part of it that deals with infrastructure, and even that is using the Chamber's approach rather than the Democratic method in order to be "bipartisan".

The bi-partisanship they are talking about are all from proposals put forth by blue dogs in agreement with full on Republicans.

Still not buying, but you are learning to sell the right wing policies (I am sure you don't even realize it) that have not helped this country.

Not buying, you are wasting your time, as any salesman will tell you, it would be a better use of your time making cold calls than trying to sell someone on a product they have learned is faulty, plenty out there are just to misinformed to know the product is faulty and you should be out looking for them.

10. If you believe it just because you believe it - facts be damned - so be it.
If you think that arguing for stronger unions, more progressive taxes, a stronger safety net and more effective corporate regulations (like those progressive (but "free trading") Europeans and Canadians) is selling right wing policies, then we do indeed "have a different definition".

Plenty of "working class blue collar people" get great jobs from exports. If you think that exports just benefit shareholders and CEO's, just ask some Germans, French or Canadians, among others. (German manufacturing employees make 50% more than Americans and most of what they produce is exported.) Of course, those countries don't have the weak unions, regressive taxes and unregulated industries that we do.

I realize that I'm "wasting my time". If you believe what you believe without regard to what actually happens in the world, well that borders on a religious belief and we all know it does not good to argue religion.

11. Explain the trade deficit that skyrocketed when free trade deals were put in place.
It does not create exports as advertised. when will you people stop believing the Chamber of commerce lies?

Also why did you veer away from the jobs bill and talk about other things, that although progressive, are being used to justify cuts to "entitlements"

You have to learn the difference between actual facts and propaganda, Free Trade was largely responsible for imports, the exports is the carrot they dangle in the brochure that never seems to materialize. It was the jobs that were exported.

Facts be damned is your religion not mine.

12. So we have almost no deficit with "free trade" countries, but our overall trade deficit is the fault
of "free trade". You're going to have to walk me through that one unless you don't like all trade and "free trade" is just the easiest target.

You can call it "listening to Chamber of Commerce lies". I call it observing what actually happens in Europe and Canada. The fact is that those progressive countries trade than we do and have more "free trade". And their middle class is stronger than ours and their distribution of income is much, much more equitable than ours.

6. Nothing says "Democratic" like a pre-emptive bash of fellow posters.
IMO, some DUers are way too concerned about what their fellow DUers post or MIGHT post.
