Newt Gingrich to detail new ‘Contract With America’

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich on Thursday will outline a set of sweeping changes to government that he says will foster a “national renewal” in the United States and return the country to its founding principles.

Gingrich, who is trying to revive his presidential campaign after a series of stumbles early on, will unveil the 26-page plan at a press event in Iowa. It is modeled on the 1994 “Contract With America” that Gingrich helped write while in Congress.

The new plan, which Gingrich has dubbed a “21st Century Contract With America,” resembles the original in that it puts forward a series of proposals rooted in conservative ideology, according to an advance copy published by the Des Moines Register. It touches on everything from Social Security to immigration to what Gingrich views as disproportionate judicial power.

Arguing that bold action is required immediately upon taking office, the Republican Party’s renowned idea man promises to sign dozens of executive orders immediately after his inauguration that would “immediately transform the way the executive branch works.”

Like Adolph Hitler's final desperate hours in the bunker, someone should tell Newt that his fleeting moments of past glory have long since come and gone. Newt and his 1994 Congressional majority, many of whom still persist in office, didn't quite get around to fulfilling an important aspect of the original CFA -- namely, congressional term limits. If he had follwed through, we wouldn't have individuals such as Boehner and McConnell still darkening the doors of the Capitol. Long-term incumbent Democrats do not come in for the same criticism, since they are not the ones who gained power by making a false term limit commitment to voters who put them there.

If they are doing their job well (or otherwise) then let the voters decide. Elected representives are effectively "term limited" anyway, as their constituents have always had an opportunity to dismiss them at the end of an election cycle.

Reporting from Des Moines— Newt Gingrich unveiled a new "Contract with America" on Thursday, a set of proposals he said would lay the groundwork for righting America's fortunes were he to become president.

Gingrich was a coauthor of the original Contract with America in 1994, which helped Republicans gain a majority in the House of Representatives for the first time in decades and ushered Gingrich into the speakership. That document contained specific legislation that Republicans promised to bring to the floor if they took control of the House.

The 23-page document that Gingrich unveiled Thursday was far less specific. Gingrich said the plan was a starting point, and that he would seek input from Americans before revealing more specific proposals in September 2012.

Grand descriptions aside, the new contract contains four sections — a set of 10 legislative changes; a pledge to sign as many as 200 executive orders on the first day in office; a training program about limited government for appointees and transition team members; and using social media to involve citizens in pushing the changes. (Some of the proposals had previously been suggested by Gingrich.)

... since the advent of Gingerich's first Contract On America, we have seen a steady stream of, "businessmen first, statesmen last", congress critters. They worry about lining their own pockets/cutting deals before any positive, meaningful legislation for gets passed. It also occurs to me that I never seen the GOP slogan, "He/She is a business person, they know how to run a business, elect them!", until the advent of Gingerich and the original Contract On America. Before that, it seemed everyone took a Civics class in public school and understood that a business person, in it for themselves and their own (not a bad thing) and those that choose/are predetermined to serve others were two different breeds.
