A man in Bihar Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs25,000 (Dh1,864) on his wife for giving birth to a female child, forcing the local administration to intervene.

Ironically, Nargis, a girl born on Monday in a village in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, was welcomed as the world's seven billionth baby.

Authorities said they had to personally intervene into the matter after Mohammad Manzoor, a resident from Muslim-dominated Purnea district in Bihar, drove out his 30-year-old wife Shahnaz from his house saying she would be allowed back in the house only when she pays the penalty amount.

According to officials in the area, Manzoor even declared the fine would be doubled if she gave birth to another baby girl while categorically stating, "Girls don't matter and this addition is a load."...

The male of the human species carries the chromosome that determines if the sex of the egg is male or female. It's his own damn fault if the child is a girl- and he is the one that should be fined.

All females have X chromosomes in their genetic makeup. Males have X & Y.
For the gamete to form an embryo it must be fertilized. If the chromosome coming from the male is X then the out come is XX this will be a female and if it is Y then the zygote will be XY then it is a male.

I wonder whether the man ever attended primary school, let alone managed to be exposed to the science of genetics. Does anybody here have a fucking clue what poverty and underdevelopment actually mean?

I'd bet quite a bit that more than one person who read this thread didn't know that sex of offspring is determined by the genetic material contributed by the male parent.

I'd bet quite a bit that the parents of a whole lot of middle-aged people reading this don't know that. For chrissakes, more than half those parents probably believe the world was created in 6 days a few thousand years ago by the great sky fairy, right?

To a family in the circumstances of much of the population in that region, girls ARE a load. They will not earn incomes, their economic value is soley as wives, while sons have economic value as the parents' retirement plan. That's one reason why educating girls is so important, so their value rises in the family.

It really isn't like our admirable Western society has been so very different for so very long. Four or five generations, in human history terms, doesn't make us tremendously different from them. We just happen to have had the economic development that gave us our fine educations and the economic opportunities that enable people to make choices. Not that some women aren't treated much worse in our societies anyway.

This man's conduct was unpleasant. It was obviously born mainly out of ignorance, and the systemic devaluing of women and girls that is inherent in his community.

It actually is not his fault that he doesn't know about sex determination or that daughters will cost him money with no return on investment. When there are no old age pensions, this is something people actually have to worry about.

Thank your stars that you don't, and maybe find another way to get your kicks rather than mocking and vilifying people who live with disadvantage and hardship you can't even imagine.
