Omaha authorities on Tuesday told a group of demonstrators that they would not be allowed to stay at a vacant lot owned by the city, but a deadline came and went without action from either side.
About 60 people gathered late Tuesday at 24th and Farnam Streets in support of Occupy Omaha. At the northeast corner of the intersection, the protesters held handmade signs, moved in about a half-dozen tents and sat around a fire to stay warm.
Officers visited the site in the afternoon to discuss the group's departure. "10 p.m. was a mutually agreed upon time for dispersal," said Officer Michael Pecha, an Omaha police spokesman. "We are working with them and trying to resolve it in a way that works for both sides."
However, the protesters were still at the site early Wednesday and police had taken no steps to clear the area. Two officers stopped by about 2:15 a.m. and again told the demonstrators that they would not be allowed to stay, though a new deadline for them to move on wasn't set.
