Phone-hacking: Police revise up number of potential victims

A total of 5,795 people may have had their phones hacked by the News of the World (NoW) newspaper, police now say.

The figure was "very likely" to be revised in the future following further analysis, the Metropolitan Police said.

In July, police said they had gathered material containing 3,870 first and second names of people whose phones could have been illegally accessed.

Sadly, that might not be TOO far from the truth.

2. There are apparently some complicated issues with this

associated with changes in your laws concerning our privacy roundabout 2009 which have an effect on cases prior to and after that date , the manner in which a phone was obtained and finally exactly what misuse was made of that information.

The police are going to need to sift through this lot to see what's what before the Crown Prosecution Service decides which cases merit charges being made. I would doubt there would be any further out of court settlements. If the whole lot went to court I'd estimate it would take at least 10 years to clear the backlog.

3. I wonder if your countrymen and lawmakers might be demanding/taking a closer

look at those 2009 changes if they in ANY way made it even marginally legal for Rupert's sleazemongers to hack. I would certainly hope so.
