Arizona's Giffords vows return to Congress

PHOENIX — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords vows to return to Congress in a new book that details months of intense therapy and her emotional battle to come to terms with what happened when a gunman opened fire in front of a Tucson grocery store.

The memoir, called "Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope," is the most personal and detailed look yet at Giffords' struggle over the past 10 months to relearn how to walk and talk, and her painful discovery that 12 others were wounded and six killed during the Jan. 8 attack.

The book is written by Giffords' husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, but Giffords delivers the last chapter — a single page of short sentences and phrases entitled "Gabby's Voice" in which she says her goal is to get back to Congress.

"I will get stronger. I will return," she vows. Giffords, 40, stunned colleagues by appearing on the U.S. House floor in Washington on Aug. 1 to vote for the debt ceiling deal, but she has focused most of her time on her recovery at TIRR Memorial Hermann, a rehabilitation center in Houston.

1. Good for her.......
I am overwhelmed by her tenacity, focus and scrappiness. I wish her the best and would love to see her return to Congress to continue her fight for her constituents. But first and foremost I hope she focuses on her own personal recovery - physical, emotional and spiritual as well as the needs of her family. After all those are the most important things.

3. Hope the GOP spends a lot of money
a lot of money trying to campaign against her. That money would help the economy, but ultimately it would do no good. I honestly don't see how she could lose, given the very things you mentioned. She's a wonderful human being an I wish her the best!

5. Her district includes
two major military installations - Fort Huachuca and Davis-Monthan AFB. Plus there are a large number of military retirees. Not a lot of them will vote for a Progressive. She's the best Democrat we are able to get.

6. I have been saying this about other blue dogs but no one listens.
They want to throw the dogs out and put in rethugs who just may change the majority in the house or senate. Who cares about the committees and the SCOTUS?
