Vote paves way for resignation of Prime Minister Berlusconi, who is expected to hand in his papers to president shortly.

Italy's lower house of parliament has voted in favour of a raft of austerity measures, paving the way for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's resignation.

Berlusconi had earllier pledged to stand down after the economic measures aimed at avoiding a bailout of the eurozone's third largest economy was passed.

Parliament's lower chamber on Saturday passed the reforms, setting in motion a transition aimed at bringing Italy back from the brink of economic crisis.

The lower house of Italy's parliament has passed a package of austerity measures demanded by the EU and designed to restore markets' confidence in the country's economy.

The vote paves the way for Silvio Berlusconi to resign as prime minister.

1. that raft of auterity measures won't hurt Berlusconi, will it?
It's just the little people that will have to do without if I'm not mistaken.
