Raid on Occupy Oakland camp could be hours away

Speculation grew late Sunday that police would move within hours to raid the Occupy Oakland camp.

Police action appeared imminent after Mayor Jean Quan announced that Oakland would open its winter shelter a day early. The shelter, to be opened Monday at 1145 Midway St. in the Oakland Army Base, operates every year from November through April and can hold 100 people.

It had been scheduled to open Tuesday, the same day as a planned campuswide strike at UC Berkeley. Students and Occupy organizers called for the strike to protest the recent treatment by UC police of an Occupy Wall Street camp at the university.

Meanwhile, political pressure on Quan to have police break up the Oakland camp rose sharply in recent days after a man was shot and killed just a few feet from the camp's borders, at 14th Street and Broadway.

Local police resources could be badly strained this week if the campus strike and the anticipated Oakland camp raid coincide, as both are likely to lead to large protests.

3. City of Oakland needs to look at Portland

The restaint used by the law enforcement was impressive and they knew it was necessary... they were greatly outnumbered. Had the PDX cops they acted stupidly, like the Oakland PD are prone to, the city of Portland would be filled with broken glass and overturned cars, crowded emergency rooms, morgues, and jails. And lots of future lawsuits Both sides behaved as they should have, even though the whole thing was unnecessary and who knows how much that escapade cost.

Oakland's city government and law enforcement should be reviewing the Portland Standoff videos right now, and thinking it over
