Second Mile CEO steps down
Source: Chicago Tribune

By Andrew McGill, Of The Morning Call
10:02 a.m. CST, November 14, 2011

The longtime CEO of a children's' charity founded by disgraced former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky has stepped down amid the growing scandal.

Jack Raykovitz, who headed The Second Mile for 28 years, resigned yesterday. He's the latest official to go after child abuse charges were announced against Sandusky earlier this month, following head coach Joe Paterno and Penn State President Graham Spanier.

Authorities say Sandusky used his prominent position with The Second Mile to lure and sexually assault boys, some as young as 10. He's been charged with 40 counts alleging he molested eight boys over the past 15 years, showering them with football tickets and free trips but forcing himself upon them in his Centre County home or in Penn State's football facilities.

"Although the allegations against Jerry Sandusky and the alleged incidents occurred outside Second Mile programs and events, this does not change the fact that the alleged sexual abuse involved Second Mile program children, nor does it lessen the terrible impact of sexual abuse on its victims," the release read.

4. And Courtney will be disbarred.
"It has also replaced longtime house attorney Wendell Courtney, who resigned last week. Wendell Courtney was briefly both the general counsel for the charity and for Penn State, a position some have characterized a conflict of interest."

I don't think "briefly" is the operative word. JFTR - Penn State using Courtney as their attorney at the same time he was TSM's attorney and allowing him to work on Sandusky's golden handshake (the Were Just Kidding About Sandusky Leaving Penn State Plan) as he "departed" PS is the dumbest maneuver I can ever imagine by people who claim to be educated and educators.

3. Second Mile is done
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 11:33 AM by alcibiades_mystery
There's no way a donations-sensitive program can recover from this kind of hit. They're finished.

They should figure out something useful to do with their existing $10 million fund and shutter the place, tout de suite.

I'm actually curious about how this Wendell Courtney guy has managed to avoid much scrutiny, despite seeming to be at ground zero of the 1998 report.

9. I would say, either pay it to the victims
Or to a group who helps victims of pedophiles.

But it will probably all go to Lawyer's fees defending the Board members of Second Mile.

6. Sadly, this may well be
a pederast ring. It is impossible for me to believe all of Sandusky's inner circle didn't know what he was up to. We'll never be privy to the depth of the depravity in this case.

7. I doubt it's limited to Penn State, either.
Every college athletic program needs to have monitors in place to ensure this kind of shit does not go on.

11. Penn State fallout: Longtime CEO of Sandusky's charity resigns
Source: LA Times

The fallout from the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal continues to unfold, with the Second Mile -- the children's charity founded by alleged molester Jerry Sandusky -- announcing Monday morning that its chief executive had resigned.

The board of directors said in a statement that it had accepted the resignation of Jack Raykovitz, chief executive of the Second Mile for the last 28 years, citing "the best interests of the organization." The statement also sought to put distance between the organization's work and its founder: "Although the allegations against Jerry Sandusky and the alleged incidents occurred outside Second Mile programs and events, this does not change the fact that the alleged sexual abuse involved Second Mile program children, nor does it lessen the terrible impact of sexual abuse on its victims."

The charity said that it's launching an internal investigation of its procedures and policies and that it aims to have those findings by year's end.

Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator for the football team, was charged with 40 criminal counts that he sexually assaulted eight boys from 1994 to 2009. He says he is not guilty.

12. Another Internal Investigation .....
first Penn State and now Second Mile. Seems to me that they still want to keep it all contained and just let us know what they want to let us know. In my humble opinion - this whole mess should be conducted as an independent investigation and not be left to the people that have the most to lose doing the investigating. This is what got them into the trouble they're in now. I can't understand why no one else is asking for an independent investigation?

13. There is an independent investigation
It's being conducted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through the office of the State Attorney General. There is an additional Clery Act investigation of Penn State being conducted by the federal Department of Education.

What do you mean by "independent investigation?" Do you mean that Penn State and The Second Mile should both hire outside parties to conduct an independent investigation?
