Toledo — Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne Wednesday announced a $500 million investment in the company's Toledo Assembly Complex and the addition of a second shift that will create about 1,100 new jobs at the site.
It is part of a broader $1.7 billion investment the company is making to produce the next-generation Jeep sport utility vehicle in 2013. The $500 million investment includes a 260,000-square-foot expansion to the existing body shop and other upgrades to the factory complex. The rest of the money will be invested at other Chrysler facilities and supplier factories across the United States.
"(This) will cement even further our bonds with this great community," Marchionne told a crowd of workers and local dignitaries at the plant Wednesday morning. "I want to express my appreciation to our Chrysler people here at the Toledo Assembly Complex, along with our UAW partners, for helping us create a work environment dedicated to quality and with the flexibility to compete with the best plants anywhere in the world."
The current 3.64-million-square-foot Toledo complex employs 1,677 hourly workers and 129 salaried employees.
