ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- An explosion in Morgan County, Ohio could be felt approximately 12 miles away.

According to a release from the Morgan County Sheriff's Department, at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning the sheriff's department received numerous calls about a major explosion in Homer Township. Calls were received from about 12 miles away from people that felt and could hear the fire and explosion.

news reports indicate that, earlier this year, there was another Tennessee Gas explosion elsewhere. This 24-inch pipeline supplies natural gas to states from the Gulf Coast to New England.

Also: A woman who was walking her dog when the explosion occurred has been hospitalized. Two homes/buildings destroyed.

The manager of media relations at Tennessee Gas told WOUB it's "way too early to even speculate about a cause" of the explosion.

Richard Wheatley said the crew on the scene has confirmed that the line in Homer Township does belong to Tennessee Gas, clearing up conflicting reports from local authorities.

Wheatley says there were no customer impacts because the company has multiple lines and alternate routes to move natural gas.

He says the line is part of a 14,000 mile interstate pipeline that runs from extreme eastern Texas to the northeast.

11. Well....as long as there were "no customer impacts".

I know what he was trying to say, but a little (less callous sounding) different wording could have been used.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but the "rust belt" has a lot of infrastructure problems that really should be addressed. Falling bridges, exploding pipelines (water & gas), crumbling roads...etc.

The fracking traffic isn't going to help matters either.

Sometimes structural impurities can be missed during manufacturing--mission critical parts are typically x-rayed to check them internally, but a metallurgical weakness might get missed.

Even more insidious than that.

The Republicans in Texas decide that there really should be inspectors, and enough agencies to oversee anything of importance.

But they also let whoever offers up the most money put their friends on the agency that money creates!!

For instance, if you happen to be in the nuclear waste recycling business, and other states have pesky regulations to deal with, go to Texas. Give someone like Perry a ton of dough. Have him (when he is the governor) start an agency that will be filled with your friends.

You won't need to pay them to keep them quiet about any regulations you break - for one thing, you have the laws written to your liking. And for another thing, the policy of the revolving door means whichever friends help you end up being an executive in your company once they are "retired," from government work.
