Defiant Occupy Oakland protesters seize 'new home'

Demonstrators rip down chain-link fence and set up new base only days after police dismantled another site

OAKLAND — Anti-Wall Street protesters took over a vacant lot and adjacent park in downtown Oakland late Saturday and erected a tent camp to replace one torn down by police, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

Protesters marched to the lot and tore down a chain-link fence before pitching tents as a light rain started. Police on the scene did not immediately intervene and the camp later expanded into an adjacent public park.

"Occupy Oakland has a new home at 19th and Telegraph," organizers said in a message to supporters, adding there would be a big "housewarming" party. "Bring tents!"

The move appeared to be a direct challenge to Oakland police who less than a week ago forcibly dismantled a similar protest camp nearby , and risked igniting a confrontation. Police have said they would not allow another encampment.

3. the new home was the site of a large auto repair shop for many
years. They did mostly tire and brake work there. It closed about 15 years or so ago. I'm fairly sure the ground is inundated with petrochemicals and asbestos.

It's the only section of Jerry Brown's Uptown condo swindle that has yet to be built on. BTW don't let the local boosters kid you that condo development has struggled to find buyers. Two years ago they converted many condos to section 8 housing. A good deal for people on assistance but definitely not what Jerry Brown and his developer cronies had envisioned as part of their "10,000 housing units in downtown Oakland" scheme.

(for the record I voted for Jerry for mayor each time and have continued to vote for him.)

10. Woo hoo! Way to go Oakland. Sorry ass police force can't stop this movement.
Eventually someone will step in and stop the violence and harrassment by the cops. They should be ashamed of themselves. Spraying innocent elderly, women, children and all unarmed, by the way. Absolutely pathetic. And just more proof that the 1% control everything in this country and probably the world. Too bad for them though. The 99% can stop them. Stop buying their stuff, for one thing. Sell your stocks. Did you take your money out of one of the big banks? If not, time to do it is now.
