Brownback Complaint About Student Tweet Lands Kansas Teenager In Principal’s Office
Source: TPM Muckracker

A Kansas teenager got in some trouble with her school for comments she posted on her Twitter account — in which she claimed to have trashed Gov. Sam Brownback (R) to his face during a field trip.

Emma Sullivan, an 18-year old high school senior, was at an event in Topeka this past Monday for Kansas Youth in Government, which was addressed by Brownback. During the event, Sullivan posted to her Twitter account: Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot

But as it turns out, Brownback’s office watches Twitter for comments about him. Brownback spokeswoman Sherriene Jones-Sontag told the event organizers about the comment, “so that they were aware what their students were saying in regards to the governor’s appearance,” the Wichita Eagle reports, also adding: “We monitor social media so we can see what Kansans are thinking and saying about the governor and his policies.”

Brownback’s office flagged the tweet to the event organizers, who in turn passed the complaint on to Sullivan’s school. This got her called to the principal’s office...Sullivan said the principal ordered her to write letters of apology to Brownback, the school’s Youth in Government sponsor, the district’s social studies coordinator and others.

More right wing bullying of youth trying to exercise their 1st Amendment Rights. Fortunately, it has created a firestorm of support for the girl on Twitter. Since Brownback apparently monitors Twitter, I suggest you give him something to read.

14. Speaking of licks........
She is fortunate indeed that her posterior was not given a taste of the board by her red neck school principal. As I understand it, in the state of Kansas, CP in schools is still legal, *if* its' practice has been approved by the local school board. Just say'in. :spank: :hi:

2. I hope she has the guts to say "bite me."
Sadly, most teens will be bullied by their school and their parents in these situations. She has nothing to apologize for - and should go on the offensive.

8. They both show very little maturity ....
but I expect more from a Governor. Hope she writes nothing, but does engage in some critical thinking before she tweets again - that is better use of her 140 characters.

Brownback and his staff just need to get a life.

10. Engage in critical thinking before tweeting?
Are you implying that she shouldn't have posted her opinion?

12. Okay, understood.
I don't always communicate clearly as a 56 yo adult, so I certainly don't expect a great deal of eloquence from an 18 yo.

Others have different standards. Nothing wrong with that, except I really wish DU posters weren't heaping so much criticism on this young woman for expressing her opinion.

And I surely reject the idea that she owes anyone an apology.

9. Good thing for her she's not a general and it was someone on her
staff who said something uncomplimentary - then she'd be in REAL trouble.
