New bodies could bring Ohio Craigslist toll to 3

Source: AP

Snip < The discoveries of two new bodies could bring to three the death toll from a Craigslist ad that police say lured victims into a lethal robbery scheme.

Snip < A body found Friday in a shallow grave near a mall in Akron may be that of a missing man who answered the ad, the FBI said. And a sheriff in a rural county said later in the day that the body of a white male without identification was found in a shallow grave about 90 miles away.

I can only imagine how many more bodies are scattered on that property.

5. The corporate media never tire of smearing Craigslist.
If the killer had used a printed classified ad or a telephone to lure his victims, would they be calling him the Verizon killer, or the New York Times killer? Despite all the gun deaths, you almost never hear about the Smith and Wesson killer. The only brandname routinely attached to murder in the headlines is Craigslist. The corporate media are on a crusade against Craigslist, because it provides services for free that used to cost money.

6. Good point.
The killers could have easily placed an ad in the local newspaper.

7. Local newspapers wouldn't have drawn people from across the country
But yes, before the Internet, there was Lonely Hearts scams/murders that used local newspapers. As communications evolve, so do criminals.

8. My point still stands that to call him the Craigslist killer is absurd and bespeaks an agenda to...
ruin Craigslist and exert greater control over the Internet.

13. All Good points
Smearing anything but corporate owned media is the thing. The PTB loathe citizen journalism, not controlling the message, or even worse...gasp...not profiting from the medium. Today's flavor is FEAR.

17. Would you prefer headlines about Black Friday violence at Walmarts be changed
to Black Friday Violence at Store? (Not the most fantastic rhetorical question ever, so...)

When's the last time you heard of a printed ad or a phone being used to lure victims? There's a reason for that.

If the private message system at DailyKos were used to lure victims, I think it would be ridiculous for a journalist to neglect to mention that fact.

19. I understand
But If a 'daily kos' ad led to a horrible crime, it would OBVIOUSLY become a lead story. There are many that would salivate to De-legitimize Daily Kos for what it is.

That said. Horrible crimes happen every day...regardless of some 'tough on crime' right wing folks, and equally the 'drum circle's don't equate crime' types too. The problem still rests with: PTB will never relinquish control until the guillotines are brought out, Mayhem sells, and worst yet.... we are a voyeuristic society, easily amused by bread and circus and equally scared of our very own shadows of existence.

20. That's a silly question.
Unlike Craigslist, Walmart is the actual location of the violence and may be responsible for fostering conditions that make it likelier. (Or not, but the question arises.) Yet note that even in your example, you don't say, "the Walmart violence," but "violence at Walmart." The preposition is important.

Here's a list of killers who used classified ads, most of them prior to Internet:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonely_hearts_killer

If PMs at Daily Kos were used to lure victims, I'm sure you'd agree with me that journalists should and would mention that fact. But a headline that named the "Daily Kos killer" would be misleading and unfair to DK.

Haven't you noticed the campaign against Craigslist? Craig (whatsisname) was even hauled before a House committee so that they could call him a pimp and accomplice to violence for accepting sex ads. The logic behind the Craigslist hysteria is applicable to anything allowing anonymous users on the Internet. Like this site.

21. It wasn't about robbery - no matter what the cops say.
Cops are not known for their literary and cultural sophistication.

It looks to be a 'most dangerous game' hunt thing - a thrill killer trolling for people who won't be missed so he can lure them into the bush and hunt them down.

22. Not necessarily
I once bought a $700 camera off Craigslist. I'm not poor, I just didn't want to pay twice that for it new. I arrived alone and went up into this guy's apartment. He showed me that it works, threw in a case, we called it a deal, I bought it, shook his hand and left.
