Villaraigosa says protesters will have "ample time" to leave park
Source: Los Angeles Times

As the midnight deadline approaches for the closing of the City Hall encampment, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issued a statement saying Occupy LA protesters will have "ample time" to leave before police begin clearing their tent village.

"Though the park will officially close tonight at 12:01 a.m., the department will allow campers ample time to remove their belongings peacefully and without disruption," Villaraigosa said in a written statement Sunday night.

The mayor reiterated his earlier statements that the seven-week occupation of City Hall's south lawn had run its course and that it was time for protesters to move on.

"I am proud of the fact that this has been a peaceful, nonviolent protest," the mayor said. "I trust that we can manage the closure of City Hall Park in the same spirit of cooperation."

1. Hope he doesn't just mean they will have 30 minutes. And hope he informed
LAPD. Because they, being LAPD, must surely be champing at the bit to knock some heads.

3. Yeah, your first amendment rights have run their course, now shut up while
we, the 1% continue to screw you.

I can't be the only one who sees that the people in office ARE the 1% and, unlike we the serfs, they will vote to protect their interests.

4. The question is
how many police officers do they have present to enforce the eviction. The way I am inclined to read that comment is that he is planning to try it the smart way, the way things started here in Portland. Let the protestors stay past the deadline, declare victory. Then wait for the crowds to taper off as the night progresses, and move them once the numbers are in their favor.

5. I'm sick and tired of the Police Militias, moving in under the cover of darkness.
...goons...lurking in the night.

Have some balls Mayors...give a 12 NOON deadline for a change...so the world
can actually watch.

And what exactly is it costing ALL of us, in terms of TAX PAYER DOLLARS, for the Mayors and Goons
to play terrorist to Americans? Hows about terrorizing some of them Bankster types??

6. Withdraw
...and regroup over the winter. Plan, plan, plan. Then plan some more. By the time spring comes, the numbers of the jobless and disenfranchised will have doubled. The american public will be far more sympathetic. When the snow melts, come out innumbers that will make them crap their pants.

10. I am dreaming
Of a day when the 99% can peacefully assemble without the threat of police brutality. And I have shown my support for my local Occupation, in Erie Pa (hi guys!) By dropping off hot hot pizzas, doughnuts, and carrying a sign when I can. Climate presents a problem here, it can drop to -20 in the winter, and Occupysickles would not serve the cause. It is a subject that has been discussed in the GA. Warmer climates, of course, are different.

9. I was down at City Hall tonight. The parking spots on the streets close to the Parker Ctr around
the area in which the tents are situated were lined with police cars including three cars maybe that looked like they were for undercover use.

I did not see men in uniform, however. Wonder where they were? Did I just overlook them? Were they sitting in the cars but I did not see them?

Or were they mingling in the crowds undercover?

By the way, a police helicopter made the rounds above the area at a couple of times while we were there.

16. Why they gotta be so freaking brutal?
Edited on Mon Nov-28-11 03:16 AM by tblue
Why do they have to amass an army with headgear and billy clubs like there's a riot going on? Why? Don't they have anything better to do?

Can't watch stream on my ddroid, don't have home computer. Lapd riot cops are using a special tac channel, but there will be some spillover traffic on the regular channel if things get ugly. Let's hope not.

26. my guess
Is that this "ample time" rhetoric will later be used as an excuse for violence when they do evict. "After all, we gave them ample time". For the record, I am 54 and have spent much of my adult life being fucked over by the 1%. Seeinng this movement achieve its aims would make me very, very happy. I am also old enough to have clear and haunting memories of the Kent State massacre. I pray this generation does not have tocarry the cross of that kind of memory.

Being disabled and putting yourself in harms way at all! I have been following your reports, some confusion on my part due to reading misinfo in other posts. You have drawn the attention of DUers to Occupy and that is of extreme importance.Thank you again and stay safe!:hi:

37. Firewalk
My elderly Grandma is disabled, an amputee. She is also a heroine, having lost a leg during WW2 in service that she won't even tell me the whole truth about. I have cared for her for years, and have learned that many of the so-called "disabled" are heroes that provide inspiration to those who see the courage of their fight. I have no problem calling any occupier "hero", these folks who stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Scott Olsen, and risked their own lives to pull him to safety. There is no greater love. Thank you for everything you are doing for Occupy.:yourock:
