You want to know the biggest reason Mitt Romney hasn't surged at any point in the Republican Presidential race this year? It's because the more GOP primary voters across the country have been exposed to him, the less they've liked him.

There are 13 places PPP has polled the Republican race in October or November where it also did a poll sometime between January and March. In those places Romney's net favorability has dropped by an average of 15 points over the course of the year.

On average Romney's favorability with primary voters was 54/25 in these 13 places at the begininng of the year. Now it's only 50/35. His problem is partially that his positives have gone down but more than that it's that as his name recognition has increased, most folks moving off the fence have gone into the negative column.

What's most remarkable about the decline in Romney's popularity is how uniform it's been- he's less popular now than he was at the start of the year in all 13 places where there are polls to compare. And in 11 out of the 13 places that decline in his net favorability has been at least 14 points- the only places with more modest declines are Maine and North Carolina.

5. I think there's two schools of thought among Republicans.

The big business, big money side of the party wants Romney, mostly because he's relatively moderate and is essentially one of them. The problem is the big biz side of the party has been courting social conservatives to win elections, and now that said conservatives are such a huge part of the party, their insistence on a far right ideologue is interfering with the big biz side's wishes.

They seem to not care about his "family values" or his Tiffiny's bill. They seem to think he's the "ideas" man, though this platform copies all the other candidates or waters them down. And the Republicans are positively nostalgic about his fights with Clinton and the (completely failed and broken by Gingrich) "Contract with America" And they're in total ecstasy that he threw his tantrums and shut down the government.

So if not Newt, then who?

The GOP establishment will come in and save his ass in some way. Then, the tea party crazies will be pissed and will support a third party candidate which will split the vote. Ross Perot all over again.

None of the other candidates has even a remote shot at beating Obama so the Bushes and the Roves of the GOP world will do whatever they can to push a Romney.

The other option is that they let the GOP crash and burn this cycle and run Jeb in 2016.

18. All bets are off. Romney is their strongest candidate in the General, but if Newt can keep his ego

and mouth somewhat under control for a few months he just might win the nomination. That might be a very good thing. Putting Newt at the top of the ticket could lead to a GOP disaster. His negatives among the electorate have always been high, and unlike Romney he has high implosion potential. Many swing states and districts could see a huge backlash from energized Democrats and alarmed independents.
