Clear Channel San Francisco Shuffles Talk Station Lineups (Green 960 shifts to Fox News)
Edited on Tue Nov-29-11 03:57 PM by Newsjock
Source: All Access

CLEAR CHANNEL is shuffling the lineups at its Talk stations in SAN FRANCISCO, and the net effect is the move of the liberal "Progressive Talk" format presently on Talk KKGN-A (GREEN 960) to the HD-2 channel of Oldies KKSF (OLDIES 103.7), with call letter changes and programming swaps on the two AMs.

... What is now KKGN-A (GREEN 960) will pick up the FOX NEWS RADIO affiliation and KNEW-A calls, and will pick up PREMIERE's GLENN BECK for mornings (presently noon-3p on 910 AM), syndicated DAVE RAMSEY 9a-noon (also from 910 AM), PREMIERE's RANDI RHODES remaining from the GREEN lineup for noon-3p, and FOX's JOHN GIBSON moving over from afternoons on 910 to the same slot on 960.

The current KKGN lineup, including DIAL GLOBAL's STEPHANIE MILLER and THOM HARTMANN, PREMIERE's RHODES (simulcast with 960), and syndicated NORMAN GOLDMAN, will be heard (as "FM PROGRESSIVE TALK") on KKSF-FM-HD-2 and online.

or a smartphone, or online, etc.

In San Francisco!

Oh, and the other effect: Randi (the only surviving Green 960 host who will still be available on traditional radio in SF) now shares a station with Glenn Beck.

7. wow...so the Bagger types are probably afraid that their voter suppression efforts might not work,
so they are now going to switch to suppressing information/discussion and in Clear Channel's
case, pick up the brain washing like FuxNooseChannel.

Get rid of education...pound the Bible from the pulpit...drill bullshit into brains via radio/TV...keep
the 99% down/out/silenced.

It never stops.

8. and it goes over to cable t.v. too ....
..... turn it on and almost anytime you can see people building guns, shooting guns,
rednecks having interpersonal problems in the woods, swamps, and or gold mines,
large Christian families who have been "blessed by Jesus" so the mother has 15 + kids,
"Christian programing," Fox, CNN, some of the programing on MSNBC, and all kinds of
right wing garbage. In Ohio WOSU 820 AM that hits 80% of the state has been sold and switched
to an all Catholic right wing station and the Columbus Dispatch has bought out most all the
local papers and magazines so in 2012 "they" can pound out their message 24/7.

In Columbus we have had 2 progressive stations shut down by the right wing.

9. A study done by Free Press and the Center For American Progress.

A study done by Free Press and the Center For American Progress released in 2007 detailed what we are up against.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2007/06/pdf/talk_radio.pdf

Our opposition are wealthy and hire many smart people. These are people who will do anything for money and power. They have had a lot of time to create their information sources and do a great job controlling the message.
I am not a fan, but one must know and respect ones opponent. Our side must support our media sources any way we can.

I listen to progressive radio on my android phone with the tune in app. There is nothing on the air locally.

10. Fuck Clear Channel and free market fundies who thought the MARKET would enforce a fairness doctrine
Edited on Tue Nov-29-11 07:23 PM by alp227
Clearly the free market of media did NOT, especially after the 1996 telecommunications act! Man, I never thought that Clear Channel would aim for the heart like this. I've listened to Green 960 since late 2010, and if CHEAP Channel doesn't get an earful it'll be RIP progressive radio on 960 AM in SF, Sept. 28, 2004 to Jan. 3, 2012. RIGHT ON TIME for the 2012 elections, sounds like there is a lot of political motivation behind this. And 910 will become a poorer version of KGO with a CON morning show of Armstrong & Getty (whose show I don't recall has been on the Bay Area but is on KSTE 650, the same out of market station audible in the Bay where Michael Savage is now exiled). I tweeted to Green 960 and Thom Hartmann about this.

Anyway speaking of Hartmann I usually listen to the non-commercial feed. For the first hour I listen on MAIN FM in Asheville, N.C. so that I can hear the Worker's Independent News segments during breaks. Then for the last 2 hours the Livestream.com/thomhartmann feed that includes the bonus calls and "On the News" segments. So I wouldn't miss not having Hartmann on over-the-air radio anyway. But seriously I get the chills now that I can't hear Mike Malloy over the air anymore here. I live in San Jose, where 960's signal is rather average anyway (960 is 5,000 W) compared with the full-power (50,000 W) KSFO 560 (local Limbaugh/Hannity/Levin insane asylum) and KGO 810 (the saner bipartisan news/talker more connected with reality).

So disappointing on so many levels, but hey! It's frickin' CLEAR CHANNEL, the same company that failed to implement proper emergency alert services on its stations in that town in North Dakota back in 2002 when the train crashed and was blowing up chemicals in the air. The same Clear Channel that trashed progressive talk for same ol' CON talk and sports even despite listener outrage in other areas, such as Miami.

But it's interesting how CC kept Randi Rhodes on the future 960 AM schedule in between those RW blowhards. Similarly, Rhodes' flagship station where she began her radio show, WJNO in West Palm Beach, Fla. (also a CC station), has RW talk all day then Randi on tape delay 9P-midnight.

BTW, right now I'm listening to Norman Goldman on its video feed here. Often it replaces commercials with rock music. No bonus segments unlike Thom.

Does anyone listen to 94.1 KPFA, the local Pacifica station? That station has Democracy Now and some other progressive programming, but I don't know if KPFA can influence the constituency as much as the mainstream talkers do.

Anyway if you wanna speak out in support of Green 960 call their listener line: 1-866-960-5753

960's programming director email: ccrsfo2qke@clearchannel.com

11. Much weaker signal ...
Edited on Tue Nov-29-11 08:21 PM by aggiesal
Don't be fooled by the maps below
At first look, 103.7 looks better then 960, because of the scaling factor.
A closer look, and the signal does not reach Santa Rosa Napa or Fairfield.
Whils the 960 signal was halfway to Stockton.

Green 960 signal - 5000 Watts

KKSF 103.7 signal - 7200 Watts

17. WOW, this is even worst then I expected
This will not be a standard FM signal,
It will be on the HD portion of the FM signal.
That means that anyone that wants to listen to this
over the airwaves needs new hardware (An FM-HD radio)
I don't know anyone who uses or even sell this
type of radio.

12. It won't be easy to find a replacement station, if it can be done at all
so many of the smaller AM stations in the Bay Area have foreign-language formats, not only Spanish but Chinese, Vietnamese and even (South Asian) Indian. (Cheap Channel is involved here, too; they sold their FM that had had a rather good indie-rock format to an outfit that promptly flipped it to Chinese. :( )

Maybe we could challenge the license renewal of 610 AM, the flagship of Harold Camping's Family Radio, for over-the-air fraud relating to the Rapture hoaxes.

16. That's a good idea
Maybe even a non-profit or similar org could raise the money to obtain it. I have one friend with a cab;e access show that I'm sure would love a radio spot. Then again, I can't think of anyone I know who listens to talk radio besides him and me.

IT amazes me that we've had Michael freakin' Savage on the air so long, and his face plastered on a freeway billboard, and he even LIVES here! I have RW relatives in VA who listen to him, but seriously, how many San Franciscans are tuning in to Mike Savage for anything other than amusement? I certainly have not met anyone from that weird world.

22. The same FCC that took the Fairness Doctrine off the books a few months ago?
"The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was, in the Commission's view, honest, equitable and balanced. The FCC decided to eliminate the Doctrine in 1987, and in August 2011 the FCC formally removed the language that implemented the Doctrine." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairness_Doctrine

Sorry, I think contacting them would be futile and believing otherwise is potentially dangerous.

27. Never mind the Fairness Doctrine
the real problem is that two out-of-state corporations, Cheap Channel and Cumulus, have a near-duopoly on the AM band in the Bay Area. It's the rules allowing multiple station ownership in the same market that are the problem.

They wouldn't even care about owning all these stations if they knew opposing viewpoints would be mandated. That is why they bought them all up -to prevent an alternate view from being heard. Restore the fairness doctrine!

the man is a major joke. He goes off with one of his tangents and fabricates BS. And I will never forget him bastardizing nemoeller's quote. That was such an obscene moment. Anyone who starts out with "first they came for the banks" has got a screw loose.

Okay tell me about free speech. It's monied speech and the money pushing propaganda BS with hardly any debate from the other side. Goebbels and Streicher would be envious the power these fascists have. And, how much damage did those two do to germany and to part of the german people?

This is SF, and I don't know if there are enough of clear channels type of clientel. They might have an OWS moment, where their station winds up getting protested.

Edited on Tue Nov-29-11 11:58 PM by red dog 1
From article above:

Director of Operations Don Parker said "San Francisco has a long heritage of great talk programing and talent. We saw the opportunity to expand our footprint in this crucial arena as we head into an election year, and a population increasingly engaged in local state, and national events and activism"

This is terrible!

I listen to Green 960 to hear Stafanie Miller (6-9 AM) & Thom Hartmann 9AM-Noon
plus Malloy from 6-9 PM

Looks like the only progressive survivor is Randi Rhodes.

I listen to Green 960 every day too; and I don't have HD; and I can't listen to Hartmann, Malloy & Miller on pod-casts, either; so I'm "shit out of luck!"

From above article:
"Director of Operations Don Parker said "San Francisco has a long heritage of great talk programing and talent. We saw the opportunity to expand our footprint in this crucial arena as we head into an election year.."

Writing to Clear Channel will do no good.....What we need to do is to write, e-mail & call other SF AM radio stations asking them to pick up Hartman, Malloy & Miller et. al.

Perhaps the San Francisco Democratic Party, and other SF progressive organizations will be willing to help find another station to carry these shows.

We all could contact SF newspapers as well, including the Bay Guardian, and get the word out that ANOTHER SF RADIO STATION MUST STEP IN HERE!

We, as San Franciscans, and other Bay Area residents who listen to Green 960, need to organize somehow and coordinate our efforts to find another AM radio station to carry these shoes ASAP!

30. They Were Tied With Several Stations @48th In Market
that's not good. The Limbaugh/Hannity station is tied with another station 12th. It's all about money in radio and they probably see this move as more of a money maker
especially since we're going into an election. I'm thinking they had local talent in the AM & PM drive--time, those salaries will be gone.
Still this sucks!

But the good news about San Francisco
the number one station is the Public Radio station KQED and that is unheard of. Applause to San Franciscans !!!

And as much as Clear Channel sucks and no one despises CC more than me, because I sued them, and they were ASSHOLEs,
The new I heart Radio app is pretty cool and you can listen Ed, Thom, Randi throughout the day on different stations on the app.

SF is the 4th largest market - too many stations - spread to thin for limited ad dollars in a bad economy.

36. KGO Radio plans immediate shift to news-oriented format
Source: Oakland Tribune

More news and less talk is coming to KGO radio, a move that already has lots of listeners grumbling.

The San Francisco-based station at 810-AM, owned by Cumulus Media and long known for its popular hosts and call-in talk shows discussing issues of the day, will make the switch to an all-news format from 2 p.m. to midnight starting Monday. Several of its most recognizable voices, such as Gene Burns, Gil Gross, Ray Taliaferro and John Rothmann will be let go, sources confirmed. Shows hosted by Bill Wattenburg and Joanie Greggains may also be canceled.

Twenty-year listener Carol Soc, of El Cerrito, said she's mortified by the changes.

"I consider Gene and Gil to be companions in my life," she said. "I recently learned that I have terminal cancer, and listening to KGO has become a major part of my life since I am now confined mainly to my home. I will miss both of them tremendously. Most likely nothing can be done to go back, but I miss 'the old days' already."

A short explanation was posted on KGO's website Friday morning, before the note disappeared later in the day: "After careful consideration we've determined our audience is looking for more news, which is why we are increasing our news presence throughout the day," the post read.

I am beyond pissed! No more Ray Taliaferro, etc. from KGO. All permanent employees fired; many have been working at KGO San Francisco for decades! :argh:

WRKO is now Boston's local station for Scott Brown/Mitt Romney voters and those still angry over the Chappaquiddick incident and Massachusetts legalizing gay marriage. WRKO runs Michael Savage (on a one-hour tape delay because Savage Nation is preceded by a 4-hr long local host) and Laura Ingraham.

The San Francisco-based station at 810-AM, owned by Cumulus Media and long known for its popular hosts and call-in talk shows discussing issues of the day, will make the switch to an all-news format from 2 p.m. to midnight starting Monday.

My bet is that they will have at least two "news hosts" who will banter between themselves about the copy they are reading. That makes it an opinion format, not a news format.

I remember he was talking about workers, ya know he's for the workers, anyway we were "yeah, that's right", then he inserted pure anti-labor BS-hubby and I both looked at each other and turned the station. That's one thing with limpballs, he says things like he's really for you, then he inserts the corporate fabricated shite. Or, if there are one or two people doing something that might be deemed crazy and they identify themselves as belonging to whatever group (feminists, environmentalists, etc..)-he'll take their actions and make it part of the whole group-that it is all of those peoples' beliefs. It is one of the major flaws in logic 101, but he has gotten away with it for years. And, the dittoheads buy into it every damn time.

It's not like me or the 7+million population of the Bay Area is suddenly going to start listening to Glenn Beck more often. These are voters that regularly provide Democrats with 70%+ of their votes.

This is a state-sized region of cities, suburbs and exurbs with no Republican congresspeople and nearly no Republican state legislators and almost no cities with Republican pluralities among voters (and those cities that do are small or are towns).

Clear Channel is simply forcing radio stations that most people will automatically tune out now onto the airwaves because they have an agenda that isn't served by them.

61. Clear Channel to Replace SF's Only Progressive Talk Station With Glenn Beck as Election Year Begins
Source: BRAD BLOG

Clear Channel to Replace San Francisco's Only Progressive Talk Station Green960 With Glenn Beck, Other RWers as Election Year Begins

The only progressive AM radio talk station, Green960-KKGN, in one of the nation's most liberal cities, San Francisco, is being taken off the AM dial by radio behemoth Clear Channel Communications, Inc. --- a media conglomerate now owned by Mitt Romney's Bain Capital, LLC --- at the beginning of the 2012 Presidential election year.

Adding insult to injury for progressives in the Bay Area, the 960 slot on the dial is being replaced by Clear Channel with the likes of Glenn Beck, Fox News Radio's John Gibson and other radical Rightwing talkers, according to a press release issued by the media giant last week, touting, in somewhat Orwellian terms, their "goal of expanding talk radio in San Francisco."

"We saw the opportunity to expand our footprint in this crucial arena as we head into an election year and a population increasingly engaged in local, state, and national events and activism," says Clear Channel's San Francisco Director of Operations Don Parker in the release.

One bright side for progressives in San Francisco, the popular Randi Rhodes, who is syndicated nationally by Premiere (Clear Channel's syndication arm) will continue in her current live Noon to 3p PT slot on the new KNEW-960. She'll also remain in the same live slot in the progressive line up on the HD2 band, though few are likely to hear her there, as very few Americans actually own an HD radio receiver.

Rhodes tells The BRAD BLOG there could be a potential upside to the format change which will leave her progressive voice, as well as Bill Press' in the pre-dawn hours, sprinkled in among the far Rightwingers…

64. Why does that not surprise me?
Radio is the most corrupt, one-sided medium. They like to say "We just put on the popular stuff, but I think Reality television pretty much tells anyone that people will watch pretty f-in much anything! It is all about changing minds, and deluding Americans to keep on being suck-up sycophants to the republican party, and further radicalizing the U.S. electorate.

Who cares anyway? Most already get whatever progressive radio they listen to from the Internet, and many had completely abandoned television news, or talk shows completely for the Internet, until MSNBC came out, a bit more centrist. Now we've got Current.

But we also have to deal with the burying of liberal thought, like Maher, or Current TV, on pay-tv, or higher paying digital tiers. I recently was looking to trim a few bucks when the new Comcast price hikes came out. Going from dig-preferred to regular, eliminates Current. OF course, that too, can be had by the Internet, so....

But this can be a pretty big factor in places like California, with traffic jams, and tons of people sitting in cars.

Contrast that with conservative talker KSFO that had a 2.8 rating playing shows like Limbaugh and Hannity. If Green 960 was getting better ratings there probably wouldn't have been a change in formats. I do not see a corporate conspiracy here.

70. No, it was a MARKETING failure. In other words, they DIDN'T spend a dime to market it!
Both of CC's talk stations in SF were, largely in the basement for ratings, both KNEW on the better signal (which will now move to Green960s signal) and Green960.

However, KNEW was actually promoted, unlike Green960, about which many San Franciscans knew absolutely nothing about, because no money was spent by Clear Channel to promote the liberal station in the nation's most liberal city, according to several insiders to whom I spoke for my story now posted here: http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8974

73. I enjoyed reading your article. I do have a couple of comments about it.
You said that Sacramento hasn't had a progressive talker "in years." Actually, they had one on 1240 AM that flipped to gospel music in 2008 and one on 1320 AM that flipped to sports in 2007. So it wasn't really that long ago.

Regarding KFBK's move to simulcast on the FM dial, that is a part of a nationwide trend that has had AM news and talk radio migrating to FM. There are a couple of reasons for this. Advertisers covert a younger demographic, and many younger listeners do not listen to AM radio. Secondly, the RIAA's push to have broadcast radio stations pay music royalties is pushing many FM broadcasters to abandon music programming in favor of news or talk. I don't think that KFBK's move to FM is necessarily an effort to push a conservative agenda, but rather it is motivated by the reasons I just gave.

I'm with bradblog, I think the owners intentionally made it so the station would fail so they could change it to their blathering idiots.

with their free market BS, the owners will tell the public, well we're giving you what you want--our crappy status quo spokes people. When in reality, they've done everything in their power to make sure the station fails to justify their change. If there already is one right wing wacko station, why would you put up another one, with little or no opposing voice? You'd do that if you only want to get your message across to the plebes with no opposing voice.

Again, the excuse, it's the free market and we're just giving the people what they want, is a major smoke screen.

84. Bottom line:
This is old news. It happened two weeks ago.

San Francisco lost BOTH KKGN AND KGO at the same time. KGO was particularly tragic.

TWO bloodbaths.

Obviously, these broadcasting companies don't care about their listeners OR their advertisers. News won't save KGO. Hate-talk won't save KKGN.

This isn't about capitalism. It's about political censorship.

There is NOTHING we can do about this because no one is listening.

Have you noticed that NONE of our progressive hosts have objected to all of this? Where is Stephanie Miller? Thom Hartman? Norman Goldman? Mike Malloy? They are affected more than anybody.

You CAN go to the FCC and file an objection against these two License-holders. The FCC has to investigate every objection against a License that anyone files. Everyone here should be filing FCC Objections against local stations carrying hate-talk hosts. Have you?

In the meantime, like I said: It was a bloodbath and there is nothing you can do as a local listener.

... Except to set up a community radio station. Google Steven Dunnifer.

87. First heard about this on Malloy's show
To Mike Malloy's credit, I first heard about the imminent demise of Green 960 on his show about a week ago. He told the whole story about how KKGN is owned by Clear Channel, which is owned by Mitt Romney's Bain LLC. He told us he had been forbidden to say anything about it on air, as had all the other KKGN program hosts, but his attitude was "to hell with them!" and he referred us to the Bradblog colum about it at http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8974 What were they going to do - kick him off the station a few weeks early for spilling the beans? On the other hand, another guy & I posted comments about it on Stephanie Miller's FB page, and they were immediately deleted.

88. STOP THE PRESSES! CC might reconsider the decision
Well hold the presses... because ALL ACCESS has learned that several of the shows scheduled to be dropped from KKGN-A have been "uncanceled." Hmmmmm.

The changes announced in NOVEMBER had Talk KNEW-A (FOX NEWSRADIO 910 AM) retain its format but pick up the new calls KKSF-A and the slogan "SAN FRANCISCO'S TALK 910 KKSF."

(snip)

Several sources tell ALL ACCESS that CLEAR CHANNEL has changed its mind, and will keep KKGN-A intact. Why? Perhaps the changes at crosstown CUMULUS Talk KGO-A made the planned moves worth revisiting.

At the beginning of this month (NET NEWS 12/1), CUMULUS cuts hit the on-air staff at KGO-A, with hosts GIL GROSS (2-4p), GENE BURNS (7-10p), RAY TALIAFERRO (1-5a) and JOHN ROTHMANN (10p-1a) let go.

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/100196/has-clear-channel-changed-its-mind-on-kkgn-a

Essentially, because of the recent changes at KGO, they might keep things as-is, perhaps even making a run at some of the former KGO talkers. But this is all rumor.

In addition, CC is now airing WXXM (92.1 The Mic) Madison on an HD Radio subchannel of WKKV in Milwaukee.
