German intelligence files on ex-Nazis shredded
Source: BBCnews.com

30 November 2011 Last updated at 10:12 ET

Investigators have found that in 2007 the German Intelligence Service (BND) destroyed files of 250 BND employees who had been in the Nazi SS or Gestapo.

The BND confirmed the loss, calling it "regrettable and annoying".

Four independent historians are investigating the BND's old links with the Nazis. They say some of the missing papers concern suspected war criminals.

'Annoying' is not exactly the adjective I'd use.

17. translation issue
I'm guessing the German word used was "argerlich" (with umlaut). Annoying is only one word and likely not the most accurate in this case. It can also mean galling, infuriating, and aggravating to mention a few. I'm certainly not defending anything, just wanted to point out the likely discrepancy in tone.

3. Never forget that an unknown number of real NAZIS were given identities and jobs as Americans
cloaked by the "national security" shield. They propagated their "influence" here, that's why we, the people have been "governed" by corporate fascists.

5. Ahh Project Paper Clip.
As well as scientists the US government brought over intelligence experts so as to utilize their "enhanced" interrogation techniques. Those Nazis knew a thing or two about interrogation and it would have been such a waste to let all that expertise go to waste.

The Japanese Unit 733 was similar only far less well known. Worth Googling. Human experimentation...all the data was taken by the US government and the scientists pardoned for releasing it.

6. And I suspect the results of Nazi "medical" experimentation
were not exactly tossed away. All that stuff on the effects of cold and depressurization. Hell, the Russkis would make use of it for their military. That might have been the thinking. We'll probably never know.

A citizen really needs to know the work of Heather Pringle, Edwin Black, John Loftus, Robert Parry, etc. to grasp the enormity of the NAZI "influence" here. Especially in the "American medical professions".

Thanks for your efforts in trying to ensure that this is brought
out into the open rather than brushed off into the shadows.

12. There were other conduits besides PAPERCLIP, including some in the UK
That these NAZI recruitments should never be forgotten, I concur absolutely Nihil.
Many DUers might find the archived doc (pdf) below from The National Security Archive interesting.

8. The article actually mentions Reinhard Gehlen.
Edited on Thu Dec-01-11 07:05 AM by sofa king
The CIA encouraged Gehlen to retain his military intelligence operation against the Soviets and, the year after the war ended, allowed him to set up a human intelligence operation, ostensibly under German control but in actuality one of the few CIA (and its predecessor) operations that actually penetrated the Iron Curtain.

Unfortunately, since the Gehlen Organization was comprised almost entirely of loyalty-tested Nazis who needed to protect their identities and the crimes they had committed on now-Soviet-controlled soil, it was fairly easy to use that information against GO operatives and turn them, which in turn gave the Soviets a nice little window into the CIA.

It's a guess, but not much of one, that the GO probably also worked in collaboration with former SS members to relocate Nazi criminals and the treasure they stole to South America. Otto Skorzeny, the amazingly annoying operational specialist who rescued Mussolini, became a notable relocator after he escaped from custody wearing an American uniform provided by... unknown persons.

If the Gehlen Organization was relocating Nazis while under the tutelage and control of the United States, well, that's the sort of information that can sour relations with other countries even today. So oops!, the information was regrettably destroyed.

10. Declassified Papers Show U.S. Recruited Ex-Nazis
by Sam Roberts (12-11-10 New York Times)

"After World War II, American counterintelligence recruited former Gestapo officers, SS veterans and Nazi collaborators to an even greater extent than had been previously disclosed and helped many of them avoid prosecution or looked the other way when they escaped, according to thousands of newly declassified documents..."

19. Here's what's ''regrettable and annoying'' ...
In exchange for their anti-communist attitude, the war criminals were forgiven by the West and welcomed back into the fold, from where they continue their evil to the present day -- either themselves or through their idiological progeny.

I used to have all sorts of posts on DU detailing this process, but the links don't seem to work any longer.
