97 mph Santa Ana winds knock out power, down trees in LA

Power outages and downed trees were reported in several regions of Los Angeles County Wednesday night due to strong winds, NBC LA reported.

A major change in the weather pattern is expected to bring powerful gusts of up to 85 miles per hour and possible hurricane force winds into the Los Angeles region for two days.

The National Weather Service issued warnings that the high winds and low humidy could cause wildfires.

On Wednesday night, a wind gust of 97 mph was recorded at Whitaker Peak in Los Angeles County, according to the weather service.

I hate them. They dry everything out and we usually have our big fires when the Santa Ana's come.

3. When I lived in Greensboro, NC, there was a one time

weird weather event. A storm came over the mountains with extremely strong straight line winds. It knocked trees down everywhere. These were huge trees.
Storms from that direction aren't unusual, but that one was unexpected. When people checked the damage, they couldn't find any evidence of a rotating force that caused the damage. There was no indication of tornados.
Strange days even then.

That is maalaea bay with massive wind waves... it was very nasty for days.

11. Crazy wind, I can tell you.

I was on Melrose at La Cienega last night at about 7pm. Just as I got to the traffic light the power went out, the power lines were twanging around like guitar strings. A few seconds later there was huge flash (I thought "lightening? But there aren't any clouds!") a bang, and a shower of blue sparks from about fifty feet away and up above the sidewalk. A transformer had exploded. Scared the shit out of me. All night long it was like the house was being run over by a freight train. Strings of sirens every 15 minutes all night. This a.m., trees and parts of trees all over the streets. Desert dust in everything. I just cleaned house yesterday!

They actually said the fire season was dead due to the moisture and rain. These winds will dry that out in a heartbeat and just like that, we're on the news again!
