As other candidates attack him for being too soft on unauthorized immigration, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich signed a pledge on Thursday to build a double fence along the entirety of the southern border of the United States.

The former Speaker of the House promised in the Americans for Border Security pledge to construct a complete double border fence between the United States and Mexico by the end of 2013, should he become president. Only one other GOP presidential candidate, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), has signed the pledge so far.

Gingrich promises on his campaign website to "control the border" by Jan. 1, 2014, implying that President Barack Obama lacks the "will" to stop unauthorized immigration from Mexico.

"The United States must control its border. It is a national security imperative," the website reads. "Every nation has the right to control its border. Historically, every country that has been determined to control their border has been able to do so. Controlling the border is a matter of resources and will."

ran an occasional "The contents of his wallet/her purse" thing. One time, probably in the summer of 1964, they did the contents of Barry Goldwater's wallet. It included a estimate for building a fence around the entire country, along with a Senatorial discount.

Someone needs to do the same for Newt: have him contacted by various contractors offering him estimates on building the double wall, emphasizing the price differences when built with legal citizen labor or with "other".

Promise to put up guard towers every 100 feet, privatized, of course, and give those guards permission to shoot to kill anyone in between those two fences.

It's not big government because it's privatized.

It will stimulate the economy given the number of personnel required for staffing. This will be a further benefit to companies like the one reported on last week on the Mother Jones site providing temporary housing to oil field workers in North Dakota. I'm sure there's republican cronyism in there, so you've also got those bases covered.

And since the dead bodies will be on American soil, you have a growth industry for funeral directors, who will be shipping bodies back to Mexico.

Think of the uniforms, weapons, etc.

You know full well that this proposal would be greeted with cheers at the next republican debate (the 74th?), and those people will mean it.
