Canada won’t be ‘captive supplier’ of U.S. energy, PM says
Source: The Canadian Press

Canada will not become a “captive supplier” to U.S. energy needs, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday in advance of talks at the White House next week on deeper economic integration.

4. Ottawa aims to drum up Canadians’ interest in the War of 1812
Few Canadians think of their country as forged in blood and conflict, but Ottawa is unveiling a War of 1812 commemoration plan that should correct that impression.

The Harper government is casting the 200th anniversary of repelling a U.S. invasion as “the Fight for Canada” and is dedicating tens of millions of dollars to remembering battles it says determined this country’s destiny.

So one may expect to see a big shell game happen.

6. Interesting because the opposite is more true here in Maine...
We have two major power companies here depending on what part of the state you live in. Ours is owned by a Canadian company. They provide transmission services (delivering the electricity). The power itself is from Canadian hydro companies. Between the electricity and the transmission service, we pay 0.20/KWH. Who is holding who captive?

11. Harper is all about nationalism... an attempt to get more people to vote with the conservatives.
Edited on Fri Dec-02-11 11:05 PM by applegrove
Cause you can get people to vote against their own economic self interest if you add nationalism in with your tax cut propaganda. Mean the Conservatives have an all out campaign to diminish the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that keeps canadians informed about the country and thus the all in this together meme. So on the surface the conservatives are nationalists. But not deep down when it really matters for policy. Plus how can the conservatives use hate and fear to get votes if people have a meaningful bond with each other. I've run into many, many cab drivers or gift shop owners who tune into CBC radio...all of them new canadians. Every single day in the Sun newspaper there is one diatribe or another against the CBC. It doesn't let up.

18. We have a new tv network called Sun tv. Plus the conservatives are trying
to change the laws that now make it illegal to purposely lie during a newscast. We are about 15 years behind you. Except that we don't have a tradition of adoring ignorant people like the rightwing base in the US has. Hopefully that will save us in the end. We have always had right wing radio talk hosts. But nothing like Rush Limbaugh. Problem is we canadians consume alot of American News.

19. I used to lurk at a Canadian political message board and saw the vilest anti-immigrant...
Edited on Sat Dec-03-11 12:40 AM by freshwest
Anti-gay, anti-liberal, racist, anti-socialist, anti-public health care, misogynistic, etc. postings I'd ever seen. There may have been Americans there, but some had to be Canadian from the details.

I wanted to learn about Canadian life but it was just as vitriolic as Freeperville so I left it pretty quickly. In fact it was worse with the foul language. I couldn't reconcile that with the nice Canadians I've met on both sides of the border, and conversed with online.

I bet Murdoch has something to do with the media change. I'm sure some are listening to Rush, etc. Since they can get it online that would skirt the content laws there. Sorry they're corrupting some of the people of the good hearted Canada I know.

22. I do think Stephen Harper had a meeting with Murdoch and Ailes in 2009 in New York.
A few years later SUN tv started in Canada. I also just thought of another reason why the right in Canada wants to get rid of the CBC and up patriotism - the CBC goes into great detail about issues in the rest of the world. It is really world news. And I'm sure the Canadian neocons want Canada to be as insular as the USA is. But yeah - I've run across real tea partier types in this country. I can't stand mixed political forums in either country. I just hate the bad information the right spews so much. Teahaddists/neocons are like a virus and by this late stage it is fully canadian in nature. We have nobody to blame for it but ourselves.

23. I just found the aritcle on what Steve Jobs said to/about Murdoch, quoted from his autobiography:
"You're blowing it with Fox News," Jobs told him over dinner.

"The axis today is not liberal and conservative, the axis is constructive-destructive, and you've cast your lot with the destructive people. Fox has become an incredibly destructive force in our society. You can be better, and this is going to be your legacy if you're not careful."

Jobs said he thought Murdoch did not really like how far Fox had gone. "Rupert's a builder, not a tearer-downer," he said.

"I've had some meetings with James, and I think he agrees with me. I can just tell."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/26/steve-jobs-fox-news-murdoch_n_1032306.html

I don't know if Jobs' assessment of Murdoch was correct. I know that Ailes is no good at all, is completely GOP and helped install GWB.

Edited on Sun Dec-04-11 05:48 AM by No Elephants
Lee Atwater patented it.

One of his fans called Democrats arrogant for asking why Rethugs voted against their own self interest. Said it was because Rethugs believed in patriotism! LOL, what does patriotism have to do with voting against your own interests? Masochism, yes, patriotism, no.

26. What is he going to do?
Is Harper about to throw away NAFTA? Not likely.

This is a temper tantrum regarding the oilsands pipeline, that is beholding to one company, not national interests.

If he was trully serious, he would start building a nationally owned refinery to refine the oilsands into gas, diesel, etc. Something that many of us, up here would welcome instead of shipping the bitumen to Texas.

I hope Obama give him the proverbial finger.
