Zuccotti Park Owners Owe City $139K in Back Taxes
Source: NBC New York

The company that owns Zuccotti Park is among the scores of businesses that owe the city tens of thousand dollars in back taxes.

Brookfield Properties and its parent company Brookfield US Corp owe the city more than $139,000 in business taxes dating back to 2006, according to financial records obtained by the Daily News.

At least one councilman called the debt “ironic” given the amount of time and money the city has poured into securing the park since the Occupy Wall Street protesters claimed it as their national headquarters in September.

“Occupy Wall Street has been talking about economic disparity … and here’s Brookfield Properties, which has worked with the mayor to keep the messengers out, not paying their share,” Brooklyn Councilman Jumanne Williams, who was arrested last month at an Occupy Wall Street protest, told the News.

1. Limited GOVT or rich protecting the rich from accountability.
This is just a prime example of the PRIVILEGES that are bestowed upon those who think their individual rights are superior to those of the govt and the people in govt who concur in the abuse of resources. Bloomberg is a rich man protecting the rights of the privileged while pretending to look after the common good. He has lots of money, got an exception to run for a 3rd term and has since abused that power. Perhaps, it was all part of his modus operandi in governance that was there but hidden from public scrutiny prior to OWS. When people aren't looking, the pick pocket will steal.

7. Who pays for maintenance of the park, and how much does that run?
Has the City not foreclosed because it would cost them more to assume the maintenance costs? If the City's already carrying the maintenance, the bigger scandal is, why have they not foreclosed?

9. Probably not, since it's for 4 years, and...
the article says "business taxes" not property taxes. NYC has a large number of little taxes they nail you with, and disputes over the are not unusual.

They say they don't owe it anyway, and that may or may not be true, but if it's being disputed it's no big deal.

He'll do anything to protect his tax-dodging beard girlfriend and Wall Street deadbeats from prosecution for tax evasion.

13. Leave it to NBC...
The gestapo did not secure the park, they committed felonious acts on folks exercising their constitutional rights. But they were protecting the rights of the 1% so its ok.

17. Pay your taxes...
How about they pay their taxes before we send the gestapo in next time… the least they can do is pay for their own thugs – I don’t want to pay for them!

18. I favorite thing (well one of them) about OWS is...
... every "event"... every thing that happens, good or bad... just proves their cause(es) are real and their accusations are right on the money.

21. $139,000.00? That's all?!? OWS should offer Brookfield Properties...
... to pay it's outstanding debt to NYC in exchange for permanent residence.

Now- THAT would show all the OWS Haters!
