English rioters warn of more to come

An overwhelming majority of people interviewed about their involvement in this summer's riots believe they will be repeated and one in three said they would take part in any future disorder, a study by the Guardian and the London School of Economics shows.

Of the 270 questioned in the Reading the Riots study, 81% said they believed the disturbances that spread across England in August "would happen again". Two-thirds predicted there would be more riots before the end of 2014.

Despite more than 4,000 riot-related arrests, and harsher than average sentences in the courts, many of those interviewed said they did not regret their actions.

The research project, which is the only study to involve interviews with hundreds of people who rioted across England, found they were predominantly from the country's most deprived areas. The downturn in the economy featured heavily in interviews, with many complaining of falling living standards and worsening employment prospects.

1. Yes but the next time round

They wouldn't be met with police trained only in crowd control - not mass looting. They'll be met by the Territorial Support Groups Units and if they're very lucky nobody else - some of the football firms had already arranged a truce between themselves to take them on last time but the riots fizzled before that happened.

The main reason that riots spread last time was because crowd control tactics used only for keeping Arsenal's Gooners or Chelsea's Headhunters apart from Tottenham's Yid Army in the areas of Tottenham and Wood Green were completely out of their depth. Once word spread on that it was inevitable the issue would spread across London and then further afield.

Pair handed longest riot sentences.

Two men who tried to incite a riot on Facebook have been handed the longest jail terms so far by courts dealing with last week's rioting, looting and violence.

Jordan Blackshaw, 20, and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, 22, were both sentenced to four years despite neither of the destructive events the men attempted to organise actually happening.

The pair appeared at Chester Crown Court after police discovered Facebook pages created by the men that urged rioting in their home towns.
