22 DPS schools to be open over holiday break
Jennifer Chambers/ The Detroit News

Detroit — Detroit Public Schools on Tuesday identified 22 schools that will remain open over the holiday break, providing free meals and learning to students in need.

During the winter break, the schools will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 27, 28 and 29 and Jan. 3, 4 and 5.

The last day of school for DPS students is Dec. 23; classes resume Jan. 9.

"During the break, we know that many of our children could benefit from a continuation of academic opportunities that serve as supplemental or remedial," said Karen Ridgeway, superintendent for academics. "We also know that, in these difficult financial times, many of our children will not receive the adequate nutrition they normally receive through the DPS Office of Food Service."

1. This is great. A lot of parents have no childcare either. This is
needed all over the country. I would be happy to assist for a couple of days, and my guess is that I am hardly alone.

2. Lots of schools do this during the summer, also...
I remember going as a child...the food sucked royally. But, if your choice was food or nothing...it was well worth the walk.

4. Gyms should be made into housing for hmlss kids 24/7,365
Somewhat like boarding schools.

They need that more than gym class.

Gym wd be divided with plywood walls for private double rooms like college dorms.

Kids being hmless is a crime against humanity.

5. Kids being homeless is a crime against humanity,
but those kids need an indoor place to run, play, and learn to love physical activity.

I do not support your idea.

>They need that more than gym class.<

I disagree. Homeless children need A HOME to go to in the evenings, not a cot in a school gym.

6. I'm with you.
These efforts need to be funded, and they need to be funded by appropriate organizations to actually provide home environments, not glorified orphanages.
