Internet filters block evolution website for children in Turkey
Source: Hurriyet Daily News

A website explaining Darwin's evolution theory is blocked for children based on new internet filters, daily Hürriyet reported.

The website is inaccessible for users applying a "Children Profile" to their connection, a filter designed for underaged users in accord with the new internet regulations activated by the Turkish government.

The censor reportedly keeps children away from evolution theory, but allows access to websites on creation.

The editor-in -chief of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey's magazine stated that the ban was not against the theory of evolution specifically.

4. Most certainly. Posting about it got me booted off Free Republic.
I used to post there from a Libertarian perspective, but when I pointed out to a regular poster in a discussion about creationism that they had Islamic allies on this issue, I seemingly crossed a line. "How DARE you compare me to a Muslim?!" I was promptly "zotted".

Ah, well.

6. You bet there is and
his name is Harun Yahya.

I like the stuff he has about Islam and co-existence with other religions, and in fairness he quite often has Rabbis on his show, and guests from Israel. He's a fairly tolerant guy, actually.

The creationsim stuff..........not so much. He's not a scientist. Not even close. I suppose the only thing positive I can say is that at least he's an "old-earth" creationist, and he agrees with the scientific community on the age of the Universe, the Earth, how long Man has been on the planet, etc.

He's a character, that's for sure. I think him of as a Muslim televangelist, but a little less odious than his Christian counterparts.

11. Would you recommend listening/watching his show...?
His science (lack of it?) aside, would you recommend listening/watching his show for better insight and perspective into the orthodox Muslim culture?

You make him sound a little more than interesting.

...no just against knowledge. Gotta keep those kids ignorant otherwise they would be too smart and you couldn't fill their heads with religious BS.

7. Good thing it cant happen here
I mean, if Sharia Law is formerly outlawed (like so many of the ultra conservatives want) then they cant do stuff like

1. Ban gay marriage
2. Pay women less for equal work
3. Limit science in the class room
4. Deny birth control

Those are all things you can do under sharia law, thank God that cant happen here. Unless the evangelical christians are really secret muslims.

This was dry humor/sarcasm, however you make the blood dripping sarcasm thing...im not sure.

8. Good thing Cenk Uygur didn't start his family over there!
And wow, I didn't know that Turkey had its own "Great Firewall of China".

Turkey's creationist voice is Harun Yahya (info: wikipedia, Rationalwiki).

9. The filters are voluntary all one has to do is not use them
Edited on Fri Dec-09-11 10:02 AM by azurnoir
from the article -

The controversial new internet regulations work under two sets of filters, “family” and “children”, that block access to all websites containing material related to drugs, obscenity, terrorism and prostitution.

However the “family” profile will still allow users to access forums, personal and social network websites while the “children” profile limits the user to only several types of web pages such as public and educational websites.

Those who do not choose one of these profiles are automatically included in “standard profile,” which follows the newly set internet filters enabled by the recent change in law.

but it is nice to see you branching out
