Officials: Calif. Parents Asked Man to Beat Child
Source: ABC News via Associated Press

An Irvine couple who suspected their 15-year-old son of smoking turned to a man believed to be relied on in their church to violently discipline children, authorities said.

The parents asked Paul Kim, 39, to discipline their son after finding a lighter in his possession, dropping the boy off at Kim's Chino Hills home with permission for the beating, San Bernardino County sheriff's spokesperson Cindy Bachmann said Saturday.

Kim hit the child with a metal pole about a dozen times, causing severe bruising on his legs, according to Bachmann. The pole was about an inch in diameter, investigators said.

requires them to do. They called the police.

Anyone know what denomination this church is? Sick.

Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 04:33 PM by BeHereNow
I lived next door to a couple for a few years that went to one
of the many Korean churches in California.
Can you say "Cult?"
Some of them are so over the top it makes
the anglo-fundies look normal.

Trust me- they had some weird shit going on in that house.

19. No. Not quite, but close.
Kim Jong Il suffered from massive head trauma as a child. Whether it's from some sort of auto accident (Kim il-Sung loved cars, but he couldn't drive for shit) or he was dropped on his head I don't know, but after he got knocked around some he turned into what he is.

...the child beater from the CHURCH, eh?

Nice church.

No wonder I'm so non-religious...Sorry but time and time again, we find crooks, liars,
perverts, child beaters and molesters hiding behind a "church".

None for me thank you.

8. They didn't have the balls to abuse the kid themselves so
they hired a hit-man? Or were they too lazy? Or did they think "if someone else does it, it's not abuse"?

I got a clue for them: if the kid's wearing bruises, it's abuse no matter WHO inflicts it.

Cheez and crackers. Sooooooo many levels of wrong.

It is totally an act of cowardice whether done oneself or hired out.

37. This, + Infinity.
Why can't some people wake the f*** up and realize the damn truth? Beating kids has NEVER made model citizens. In fact, all it has done is to the contrary, as in creating more mental patients, filling up our prisons, etc........

12. where I served in West Africa there was a man
who dressed up in a very scary costume once a year and went around the village beating any woman whose husband had not beaten her during the past year.

This beating of people is a horror, I could not take watching this. I came to hate that woman beating culture with such a vengeance. And I hate hearing about this in the Korean culture as well. My brother-in-law who worked in a Korean High School said that the teachers regularly beat the kids there, that the parents expected the teachers to do this.

I hope that in time, worldwide, these dominating behaviors die out.

21. I'm an atheist and not generally pro-religion
but a church should be a safe haven or sanctuary for a child. In this instance the church is, if not the primary instigator, at least partially responsible.

35. They're waiting to see.....
if the dad was there at the time. I say it shouldn't matter if they're admitting to it. However, a lawyer will go into whether the parents knew how far the guy would take it. Well, if he came home with all of those bruises and they didn't report it, it's at least accessory after the fact.

30. Well come on Christians. Step up to the plate and condemn this "church".
You won't, because virtually every sect has some practices which others consider unacceptable (or even absolutely abominable) and to condemn one, opens you ALL up to condemnation by others.

At best, we get a lackluster "They're not true Christians". BULLSHIT! Virtually every person I know who actually FOLLOWS the teachings of Christ (or something resembling them) is an atheist or agnostic. Whilst virtually all the self declared Christians I know, care only to tell my how superior they are and DAMNED I am.

God gave man the power to DO wrong. Satan gave him the power to KNOW he was doing it. Um, explain to me again, why the first is the embodiment of good, and the second the epitomy of evil. Even the name Lucifer (light bringer) begs the question of: Which is which?

32. oh well....
although the parents were too chicken to do it. thats unfortunate. all he's gonna learn is some bad guy did it, not his parents and it won't solve anything. Metal end of the belts worse. That can get some blood going.... and from what I've heard it was either the tennis racket or one of those big fat red plastic baseball bats that grandpa nailed dad with. But rather harsh for a lighter. But then again.. I had tight clothing on in church and was never quit comfortable down there. I guess they thought I was possessed by the devil for masterbating in church which I wasn't.. messed me up for life. have severe OCD

34. The church messed me up also
I lived in a catholic orphanage when I was little and the nuns were always beating on us. I still have nightmares. Needless to say, I raised a beautiful, smart boy and never once spanked or raised a hand to him. I have had drug problems in the past - but that is now behind me.

39. Slightly off-topic here, but....
Why is a 15-year-old beating victim called a "boy", while a 15-year-old rape victim is often called a "woman"?

I don't object to the use of "boy" in this article, but I always object to stories that call teen rape victims "women"--they're girls.

That said, it's not just Korean evangelicals who think this way...Asians say their parenting style is "strict"...but it's actually abusive and psychotic. (And I say this as someone who loves almost all other aspects of Asian culture.)
