Jan Brewer gets an earful from Obama in Ariz.

MESA, Ariz. - {snip}

The two leaders could be seen engaged in an intense conversation at the base of Air Force One's steps. Both could be seen smiling, but speaking at the same time.

Asked moments later what the conversation was about, Brewer, a Republican, said, "He was a little disturbed about my book."

"We could have been talking about a million different things," Brewer told reporters. "Bottom line is that he generally wants to talk about amnesty and I want to talk about securing our border."

Brewer recently published a book, "Scorpions for Breakfast," something of a memoir of her years growing up, and defends her signing of Arizona's controversial law cracking down on illegal immigrants, which Obama opposes.

1. she's the scorpion. she's one of those people given power

who shouldn't have any beyond deciding what their dinner is gonna be. Most of us have known a family relative or work bully like her. Arrogant and loud, confident in her absoluteness!

2. I was diagnosed with a large duodenal ulcer when docs still thought ulcers were caused by

"nerves." And I had just started working in a high stress profession. Besides, I am female, which always points in some doctors' minds to psychosomatic causes of physical symptoms. Not than an ulcer is a mere "symptom."

Without saying anything like that directly, my doctor (whom I adored) told me I should be living on the island of St. John, with nothing more important to decide than what's for dinner.

Maybe I should have been offended, but as a homemaker who was also working horrific hours at the office, it sounded dang good to me.

I asked him to write a scrip so I could try to get my health insurer to pay for it.

4. I have not been to either St. John or St. Croix, but I liked St. Maarten/St. Martin.

The reliable weather is only December through March, though, but I imagine the BVI are the same.

You have to love the early explorers, though: "My ship managed to get here, so my country must own this island. Now, who are those odd-looking people who have been living on my country's island since before I got here?"

6. While H. pylori can be an issue, stress does cause ulcers

Mostly in men, actually. For once, it's not one of those "woman problems" doctors seem to love using as an excuse not to treat the real problem. :)

I'm one of many people who has recurring problems with ulcers, solely due to stress. I've never tested positive for H. pylori. But if I were to take one drink of orange juice, I'd end up in ER. :(

7. In my case, I think there may have been a connection between

the amount of Extra Strenghth Excedrin I was taking at the time--then made up of aspirin and as much caffeine per pill as a cup of coffee, so lots of acid. And I was drinking coffee every day at the office as well. (Previously, I would have it only Sunday mornings.) And, I would often go without eating. (As I said, it was a very high stress job.)

A friend of mine swears he got his ulcer from eating a pint of coffee ice cream every evening.

In any event, once the ulcer was treated and cleared up, I never had a recurrence, though I was in the high stress job for a long time and did keep taking the Excedrin and drinking the coffee.

But, I am so very sorry about your recurring situation. And I do hope you find a way to manage the stress, or get it out of your life.

I was not, in my post, intending to negate stress as a cause, only to explain what my doc said to me as soon he knew (from imagine) that I had an ulcer.
