Bill renames Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America
Source: Houston Chronicle

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — State Rep. Steve Holland wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America for "official purposes within the state of Mississippi."

Holland, D-Plantersville, says the measure aims to mock anti-immigrant legislation that he finds mean-spirited and insignificant. Newly elected Gov. Phil Bryant supports legislation to allow the state to crack down on immigration. Republicans won control of the Mississippi House last November.

If approved, House Bill 150 would take effect beginning July 1. It began drawing attention Thursday on various Internet sites.

Not everyone is in on Holland's joke.

Mr. Holland can have a very dry sense of humor, and all over the internets people are jumping to conclusions and not getting the joke in the story.

Cue Colbert.

1. I remember when French fries in the Congressional dining room (and some red eateries) were re-named
"freedom fries." IOW, when it comes to stupid, it's hard to outdo reality. So, no wonder people are not immediately assuming he's joking.

BTW, when I took my son to see Red Sox Spring Training in Fort Meyers, Florida, I got my first serving of freedom fries. So, some places never reverted to sanity.

5. I laughed when I heard this at a restaurant
"I'll have french fries with that."
"You mean freedom fries."

"Oh, so France and Freedom mean the same thing? Who knew."

Shut the waitress up fast and I laughed so hard I got sick
