TALLAHASSEE — The controversial parent trigger bill has died in a 20-20 vote in the Florida Senate.
The bill would have allowed parents at low-performing schools to choose a turnaround strategy for the school. One option: petition to have the school converted into a charter school.

But opponents said the proposal was intended to line the pockets of for-profit charter-school companies, which would have access to new business.
Said Sen. Nan Rich, D-Weston: "The centerpiece of this legislation has nothing to do with empowering parents or giving children and parents options, or improving schools. We do all of that already. It has everything to do with laying the groundwork for the hostile corporate takeover of public schools across Florida — an attack on public education."

Super news!
The people have prevailed.
Parent trigger bill sparks fierce debate as vote nears in Florida legislaturePalm Beach Post: Jeb Bush foundation using ‘parent trigger’ to trigger donationsJeb Bush's Foundation for Florida's Future behind "Parent Trigger" bill"Parent trigger" bill passes FL Senate Budget Committee (a Jeb Bush priority)Beating back Jeb Bush's "bold educational reform" is attainable when people stand up for their priorities.
And protecting and restoring the health of our country's foundation which was built on strong public education that gives equal footing to everyone, is a major priority.
We will not allow hardline conservatives to refashion the nation's public schools into privatized cash cows to enrich vulture capitalists waiting in their limo's to wire the profits into their offshore bank accounts.
Go away, Jeb Bush. The people reject what you are peddling.
