'Nightline' ratings up for war dead show

The folks at ABC's "Nightline" thought Friday's telecast with the names of Americans killed in Iraq would be a ratings loser -- and the opposite turned out to be true.

The broadcast had a 4.4 household rating in the nation's largest media markets, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Although numbers for the entire country won't be available until later this week, that preliminary measurement was up 22 percent from the previous Friday and was 29 percent more than other "Nightline" telecasts last week.

A ratings point represents 1,084,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 108.4 million TV homes.

Despite Wallace's criticism, "Nightline" received support Tuesday from Fox News Channel's best-known personality. Bill O'Reilly said Koppel displayed neutrality and he took ABC's word that it was a tribute.

"There is no anti-war record on 'Nightline's' rap sheet," O'Reilly wrote in a column that appeared in the Los Angeles Times. "Koppel reported the war straight when he was embedded with invading U.S. troops last spring."

Not that I object to O'Reilly acting as the voice of reason for once, but what brought that on?

3. I think what brought it on..

is the fact that he and the other Bush apologists sended up looking like total morans for their ridiculous protests against the broadcast. I'm guessing he got a lot of mail on the subject, probably very little of it favorable.

The RWers overestimated their influence on the public and they even miscalculated the reaction olf their own core constituency.

The right wing messed up and they realise that Sinclair's boycott probably hurt them more than it helped. Hence the,lets put ol' Bill out there and try to save face move. To late, everyone saw it for what it was!

5. Bill can be moderate at times, for a conservative

He's bombastic and a bully, but he is hardly a partyline conservative. The Freepers hate him because he bends on way too many issues for their tastes. I know he believes in global warming, and he *may* be pro-choice. Obviously, he's still far too conservative for my tastes, not to mention he's prone to screwing up facts and his beligerent style makes him impossible to have a civil debate with. But as far as repugs go, he's what they consider to be moderate.

doesn't come on until midnight here, I watched it because I hadn't gone to bed yet. It was very moving. No matter what your opinion of the war, it was appropriate to show the photos and read the names.
